Ironically, Muni Train Breaks Down Same Day It Reopens for Service

Late again?
And we had high hopes for a change.

The maiden voyage of the freshly reopened N-Judah earlier this morning didn't go as smoothly as passengers (and Muni officials) would have liked. In fact, some Sunset residents on the repaired N-Judah today were probably wishing for those shuttles of yesterweek.

Just hours after restarting service on the N after the weeklong closure for maintenance, the Sunset's lifeline to downtown broke down near the intersection of Seventh and Irving avenues, causing systemwide delays.
The official reason for the breakdown? Well, we can't blame it on the recent construction, according to Muni spokesman Paul Rose. Today's Muni's frustrations can be traced to a 30-minute power outage in the area.

However, passengers never got to enjoy the comfort of shuttles buses today. By the time the shuttles were called in to help move stuck passengers, the trains were moving again, Rose told us.

As readers -- and Muni passengers -- already know, the N-Judah had been closed for the past 10 days while crews did construction work around the lines at the intersection of Church and Duboce. Trains passing through that intersection, which is notorious for its slow track changes and lengthy wait times, should be a lot faster post-construction.

Despite all the Muni drama this morning, the agency was pretty proud that construction was completed on time, even if the punctual rides were short-lived for some passengers.

"The construction was on time and the feedback from most riders is positive," Rose said. "They're saying it's a much smoother ride."
