Former Supervisor Bevan Dufty passed along information about tonight's vigil, which will begin at 7. Organizers are asking supporters to bring flowers and signs to show their support.
If you can't make it, the vigil will take place virtually on Facebook.
Here's what Cleve Jones, LGBT civil rights activist and founder of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, wrote on the Facebook page:
Last Friday, as millions of LGBT people and their allies were celebrating Pride, something awful happened in Portland, Texas. We need to respond publicly to this tragedy. Whoever shot Mary Christine Chapa and Mollie Judith Olgin, whatever the motive, regardless of where it happened, two beautiful girls were shot and one was killed. We need to honor the memory of Mollie and pray for the recovery of Mary.... Mary and Mollie loved each other. Now we need to show our love for them and their families and friends.Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area in Portland by a couple Saturday morning. Olgin died while Chapa was rushed to an area hospital with critical injuries.
Police told the Corpus Christi Caller Times that officers had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, but they haven't found the weapon. Two witnesses said they heard what could have been gunshots or firecrackers just before midnight last Friday but did not report it.
Police say the attack did not appear to be random, but they weren't sure whether the shooter targeted them because they were in a same-sex relationship. Authorities told media outlets the incident is not being investigated as a hate crime.
