Father of Calvin Sneed, Slain Pimp, Says His Son Didn't Deserve to Die
Charles Sneed, 53, spoke with the Chron after Barry Gilton, 38, a San Francisco Municipal Railway driver on disability, and 37-year-old Lupe Mercado were charged with shooting the Calvin Sneed to death. The DA claims the couple was upset that Calvin Sneed had been pimping their 17-year-old daughter, and took matters into their own hands.
"They became God for a moment. They didn't wait for the judge, the trial, they did it right then and there in the street," The elder Sneed said.
On June 4, Calvin Sneed, a Compton resident who was a known member of the Nutty Block Crips gang, was driving in the Bayview neighborhood -- where the girl lived with her parents -- when he was shot in the head. HIs car crashed into another parked vehicle. Gilton allegedly fire the fatal shot after the couple confronted Sneed in the street, according to prosecutors.
The DA is calling this killing a vigilante execution.
"I understand the frustration that the parents must have felt," District Attorney George Gascón told reporters at a news conference yesterday. "Having said that, I think it's important to say that taking the law in your own hands is never an acceptable solution, and killing someone in a situation other than defense of serious bodily injury or death is not an acceptable solution."
