Memorial Day Weekend Brings Out More Drunks and More Cops

The hardcore enforcement starts at 12:01 a.m. Friday and carries on through Monday at midnight -- when plenty of drunks will be passed out.
So what can you expect over the weekend, besides chilly temperatures? Cops, cops, and more cops followed by a DUI checkpoint. Be especially careful when you are driving over the Bay Bridge -- it will be saturated with CHP officers.
Also, a DUI checkpoint will be scheduled on Monday at 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of San Jose and Randall avenues. Consider yourself warned.
The cops have a pretty sound argument for all these extra patrols. Last year 42 DUI suspects were hauled to jail over Memorial Day weekend, said Police Capt. Denis O'Leary. "That's up 38 percent," he said. "We hope to arrest fewer people this year -- it's an expensive, destructive, and a completely preventable crime."
