Police station on fire
A vacant police station erupted in flames this afternoon in the city's Dogpatch neighborhood.

SF Weekly
Staff Writer Albert Samaha was at Third Street near 20th Street when he spotted the fire, which possibly started on the first floor of the building. Fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge told Samaha that the building is the city's former police station that has been vacant for 16 years.

"It looks like it started on the outside," she said, adding that the fire could have been started by squatters.

The blaze broke out sometime after 1 p.m. and was extinguished about an hour later. Firefighters do not yet know what caused the fire, which spread to a second building on the site. They also couldn't tell us about the extent of the damages. However, Samaha says the windows are busted and the building looks pretty charred.

Third Street between 19th and 22nd streets is closed to traffic.
