Your Kids Should Probably Be More Afraid of Dog Bites Than Gay People
But you know what your children should probably be more afraid of than the gay-rights activist who was killed 30-plus years ago? Dog bites.
The Center for Disease Control warns that more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs every year -- and half of those are children. But oddly enough, those high-moral folks in Sacramento who claim to really care about your children obviously don't, or else they would have drummed up radio ads warning parents about Dog Bite Prevention Week, starting May 19.
And while we know Save California might disagree, we're going to go out on a limb and say, in general, dogs bites are more harmful to children than gay people.
If you don't believe us, here's some "harsh realities" provided by the experts themselves:
- Last year, 5,577 postal employees were attacked in more than 1,400 cities nationwide.
- Medical expenses from dog attacks cost the Postal Service nearly $1.2 million last year.
- In 2011 alone, more than 29,000 reconstructive procedures were performed as a result of injuries caused by dog bites
- Dog attacks accounted for more than one-third of all homeowner insurance liability claims paid out in 2011.
So there you have it -- Save California can make all the crazy claims it wants to about Harvey Milk, but at least he didn't go around biting children.
