Coast Guard Ends Search for Missing Sailors at Farallon Islands
| Marc Kasanin's body was pulled from the water after Saturday's accident |
Authorities explained to the press their reason for ending the search, saying the survivability after the crash, based on the gear the sailors were wearing, was 16 hours -- and it's been 30 hours since the accident. "There's a window of survivability and we searched well beyond that window," Coast Guard Petty Officer Caleb Critchfield told the Associated Press.
The four sailors were part of an eight-member crew racing around the Farallon Islands on Saturday for the Full Crew Farallones Race when powerful waves broadsided their sailboat, forcing it onto rocks, and pushing crew members overboard.
Authorities pulled the body of 46-year-old Marc Kasanin from the water hours after the accident, and three other crew members were rescued, according to news reports. They used helicopters and boats to search the 5,000-square-mile area, but were unable to locate the missing crew.
The San Francisco Yacht Club identified the missing boaters as Alan Cahill, of Tiburon; Jordan Fromm, of San Rafael.; Elmer Morrissey, of Ireland; and Alexis Busch, of Larkspur.
