With Payton Manning Available, the 49ers Stand by Their Man

Injured Manning to replace a healthy Smith?

Hall of Famer quarterback Peyton Manning was kicked to the curb by the Colts Wednesday after undergoing multiple neck surgeries and snuggling up on the bench for the 2011 season. Now, the question on everyone's mind: Is Manning is a top choice to replace current Niners quarterback Alex Smith?

The idea of a healthy Manning in the Niners offensive pocket is reassuring, as he can tolerate defensive pressure a little longer than the current Niners QB can. Smith's painful incompletions in the playoffs still hurt.

Although Manning is claimed to be one of the best quarterbacks in football, getting canned by the Colts was no surprise after his injuries proved him useless last season. Still, despite Manning's season on the bench, former Niners wide receiver Jerry Rice declared the ex-Colts QB a sure bet for the Niners, and suggested San Francisco snatch him up quick.

Signing him would likely be hit or miss. After three neck surgeries, no one is sure that Manning will even play next season. If he can, it would be a jackpot for the Niners. But that's a hefty penny on an unsure bet, especially as Smith is in top physical condition-- yet he's still not delivering after being coached by the Niners for six years.

In 2010, Manning completed four percent more passes than Smith completed in 2011. Manning was appointed MVP four times during his 14 years in the NFL --Smith has 7 years of experience and no gold to show for it. Could Manning, injured and ten years older, be more useful than a healthy Smith?

On Wednesday, former Colts coach Tony Dungy agreed with Rice and appointed the Niners as his top pick for Manning's next placement. "That is a team that has a great defense," Dungy said of the 49ers on the NFL Network Wednesday. "You put Peyton Manning in that offense and people are going to be scared to play them."

But even after Dungy buttered them up, Niners management aren't taking the bait. Niners' head coach Jim Harbaugh is consistent in his commitment to Smith, claiming "he's our man" at every press conference. Apparently we didn't even make Manning an offer. Sources told ESPN that 12 teams have contacted Manning's representatives, including the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and New York Jets.

Have the Niners blown a serious chance?

Any team would be lucky to have Peyton. It's ridiculous to even second guess picking him up. Manning at 50% is twice the quarterback as most starting QB's in the NFL. ITS WORTH THE RISK.!

dude omg niners are retarded! but jim harbaugh is a class act for having confidence in alex smith but he needs to realize that manning's worst day is a good day for smith look at the stats  its a fact no arguement envolved people! ahhhhh im pissed that harbaugh is being like this, i mean get manning! why not? he could teach smith a lot of stuff you know. you know why rodgers is good? cuz he played behind the best. not to mention smith was a way higher draft pick than rodgers and had a more successful college career. niners need to pull there head out of their ass seriously

Alex Smith is a bum! The only thing he has ever done that was good was in the Saints playoff game, otherwise he sucks. Peyton is a once in a lifetime QB and if he is even 50% he is better than Alex Smith Leaf. LOL! The 49ers are a good QB and WR away from winning it all, sad we aren't even gonna talk to Peyton. The 49ers are the ONLY team in the NFL who want Alex, that should say it all. Even if we don't get Peyton we should look at getting a legit QB. Hell even Jerry Rice and Tony Dungy think the 49ers should go get Peyton Manning. We won't have the season we just had in 2012 with Alex Smith....AND YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK! The 49ers need Peyton Manning!

Get Manning now! Seriously, Manning's worst season is still better than Smith's best season. Just look it up. This team is built to win right now and Alex Smith just isn't the answer.

We need to go after Peyton now. Don't make the mistake of not getting him. It sounds like he would want to play for us. And the 49ers fans would love him and embrace him! We have 37 Million under the cap and they did not even contact him? Whats up with that. We just gonna let him fall to the Cardinals? I like Alex Smith but I would not pass up on Manning. With our defense and Manning on Offense we will win the Super Bowl. Manning to Davis sounds great!

Why not get Peyton??? Look at it this way even if 25% of those field goals had Peyton behind the drive they most likely would be touchdown. Do the 49ers not want to win. Alex is not the answer. He did NOT have even one 300 yard game. The best game of his season was 299 yards. We need manning and with our defense we would be one of the top contenders for the Superbowl. Im pissed, are you kidding me? You believe in a guy without any results to show for it. He had a couple of good wins THANKS to his defense.Jim Harbaugh is missing out on an opportunity of a life time.
