Steve Ruiz, Elusive Hells Angel on the Lam, Finally Arrested in Funeral Killing
| Steve Ruiz |
Police say they "developed information in their investigation" revealing Ruiz's whereabouts: a Days Inn Motel on Warms Spring Boulevard in Fremont. The cops descended on the motel on Saturday night, arrested Ruiz on suspicion of murder, and booked him into Santa Clara County Jail.
As readers probably recall, police have been on a widespread manhunt for the elusive Ruiz since the bizarre Oct. 15 shooting in which Tausan was killed during the funeral services for Jeffrey "Jethro" Pettigrew, president of the Hells Angels San Jose chapter.
Ruiz and Tausan reportedly had gotten into a fight when Ruiz allegedly pulled out a gun and shot his fellow Angel. But the killing became even more dramatic when police arrived only to find the crime scene had been "cleaned," and Ruiz had disappeared.
At first, police believed that Ruiz, the suspect, might have climbed into Pettigre's coffin to dodge them. Investigators went as far as to get a judge's permission to exhume Pettigrew's coffin to see if Ruiz's body -- or any other evidence -- had been quickly buried next to the Hells Angel's president. Creepy. However, police found nothing inside the coffin that wasn't supposed to be there.
The cops then started to suspect that other Hells Angels had managed to smuggle Ruiz from the crime scene, allowing him to evade police for more than four months.
But don't think Ruiz's capture brings us to the end to this Hells Angels TV-like saga. As San Jose Police Sgt. Jason told reporters: "If someone helped him evade capture, we're going to come after them."
