Presidents' Day Weekend: Another Carmaggedon?

Closed for business
What better way to celebrate the Great Emancipator than with hair-pulling traffic and even more of a clusterfuck than usual for Bay Area commuters?

The westbound deck of the Bay Bridge heading into San Francisco will be closed at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, with a possibility of postponement or delays, depending on weather. The lower deck toward the East Bay, however, will stay open.

The closure is part of the Bay Bridge Seismic Retrofit Project, an ongoing effort to keep up earthquake and transportation standards for the bridge. Once the bridge reopens, there will be a detour westbound near the Toll Plaza. This small road realignment will shift traffic away from construction on the east span of the bridge, allowing for demolition of an old section of the original bridge.

The good news? To accommodate this tremendous inconvenience, overnight service will be available at BART stations on the El Cerrito-Dublin route. The stations include El Cerrito del Norte, Berkeley MacArthur, 12th Street, Coliseum, Bay Fair, and Dublin/Pleasanton. Also stations on the Concord-SFO route, including Concord, Walnut Creek, MacArthur, 12th Street, Embarcadero, Powell, 24th Street, Daly City, and SFO.

Those out partying for the presidents over the weekend will be able to hop on BART without worrying about the usual 12:30 a.m. cutoff. Additional ferries will also be running. Alameda-Oakland, Alameda Harbor, and Vallejo Baylink ferries will all participate.

Commuters are encouraged to stay informed to avoid traffic jams. Some of the worst traffic is expected on the Golden Gate Bridge and at the Hwy 92/U.S. 101 interchange in San Mateo.

So do us all a favor and just stay in the city!
