Pot smokers getting no love from Obama this Valentine's Day

​The week doesn't often begin on Friday. But then again, it's not often Medical Marijuana Week.

That Medical Marijuana Week coincides with Valentine's Day is no mistake: It was the Compassionate Use Act that got us into this fine mess where we are today, after all. Starting today, it's this week that medical cannabis patients are asking President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) for their hearts.

Figuratively, of course. A week of protest kicks off today with a presidential visit. For pot advocates watching the federal Department of Justice chip away at state-legal medical marijuana (in the words of an Americans for Safe Access e-mail blast: "San Francisco medical cannabis is under attack!"), it is times like these that try man's soul.

First up: Sign-making party. Get together with your friendly neighborhood like-minded activists to prepare signs to protest Obama's appearance next week. Gather at Lounge 8 Four 7 at 847 Howard at 7 tonight. Supplies provided. This is also an opportunity to sign a Valentine's Day card for Congresswoman Pelosi. Although constituent complaints won't compel her to save cannabis, a card can never hurt.

Take the weekend off, but keep your mind sharp. At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, you can join other San Francisco cannabis activists at the weekly Board of Supervisors meeting at City Hall. "Prepare to provide one minute of public comment demanding S.F. officials have a heart and show love to patients and providers!" ASA writes. Later that day, activists will hand-deliver to Pelosi her Valentine's Day card.

There's a candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, outside the Federal Building at 90 7th St. That's just the warmup, because Obama is in town the following day for a fundraiser at the Masonic Auditorium, located at 1111 California. Protesters are asked to gather at the corner of Taylor and California near Huntington Park at 5:30 p.m. Ask the president what's up with his seeming 180-degree flip-flop from campaign promise to save marijuana to the Justice Department's current dismantling of state-legal cannabis. Maybe he'll set the record straight on those walking guns, too.

By this point, it'll be time to relax and unwind with the "Medi-juana Movie Nite," on Friday, Feb. 17. at 7 p.m. It will be held at Lounge 8 Four 7. The exact flicks have yet to be determined, but you can borrow our Half Baked DVD anytime.
