If Paul McCartney Succumbs to Alzheimer's, Blame (a lack of) Marijuana

Life_magazine_nov_69.jpg
But pot is no longer with him
Far from being dead, Sir Paul McCartney's spectacular musical career enters its sixth decade this June, when the Beatle and vegetarian turns 70. That's a long and winding road, and one on which McCartney's constant companion has been cannabis.

But not any longer. McCartney recently quit smoking pot in order to better focus on raising his 8-year old daughter, he told Rolling Stone in a recent interview. That news is sure to warm the hearts of the children he raised in the 1970s and 1980s, when he was busted transporting a half- pound of pot to Japan.

For fans of McCartney's work (and his lack of senility), his timing could not have been worse. While stoner moments might resemble senior moments in "popular" convention, the magic plant in fact wards off instances of memory loss connected to Alzheimer's disease, according to findings published in a new book.

Yes, pot helps the brain fight Alzheimer's, according to journalist Clint Werner's Marijuana: A Gateway to Health.

The notion that pot fights Alzheimer's is nothing new: A study published in 2006 by the Scripps Institute said that THC -- described as "the active ingredient" in marijuana, a notion since exploded by the discovery of other active cannabinoids like CBD, with hundreds others yet to examine -- worked better at stopping the spread of amyloid plaque in the brain than pharmaceutical drugs prescribed for the purpose.

THC blocks the enzyme which creates the plaque that inhibits brain function, which means that marijuana can inhibit or halt entirely the spread of Alzheimer's in an older brain, researchers said. Stopping the enzyme's attack on brain cells is one thing, but marijuana use has also been linked to the creation of healthy, new brain cells, according to Werner's book, which was released last year.

McCartney and the rest of the Beatles first used marijuana in the early 1960s at the behest of Bob Dylan -- and who were the Fab Four to turn Zimmy down? The habit apparently took, as McCartney wrote "Got to Get You into My Life" about reefer, according to reports, and spoke in favor of drug legalization in interviews well into the 1990s.

If Rolling Stone asked him about legalization, Sir Paul was demure; the interview doesn't mention it one way or the other, nor does he say exactly when he decided he'd smoked a lifetime's worth of cannabis.

"I smoked my share," he said, adding: "When you're bringing up a youngster, your sense of responsibility does kick in, if you're lucky, at some point." He ended with: "Enough's enough --  you just don't seem to think it's necessary," according to the interview (which you can't read online, sorry; go buy a magazine, freeloader).

So did marijuana use contribute to McCartney's longevity? Possibly, but since he and the other Beatles admitted to using it, as well as LSD, to create Sergeant Pepper and other records regarded as indispensable classics, seems as if it's immaterial at this point.

And though the world doesn't need the spectacle of McCartney drooling on himself the next time he swings through town on tour, it would certainly give further credence to what scientists discovered last decade.

Maybe for the sake of his daughter and for the rest of us, he ought to keep on smokin'.

@Rab Simpson Rab, how many times did your parents beat you into submission for your mind to conjure up such nonsense? If I saw you walking round Coventry I would give you hardest slap you would ever receive... with the exception of your parents. You WORTHLESS piece of shit, Paul will take you to hell with him... and guess what?! He's gonna slap you too! And then your deceased parents will join the party too! Suck shit 'bro', I hope you contemplate with jumping of the top of your house and breaking both of your pathetic skinny ass legs...

Yes it does contribute to his longevity and I'll explain the short-term memory loss: It's called long-term memory gain, lasts about 45 minutes.

Sir Paul is just saying he stopped using marijuana so he can continue to see his daughter, Beatrice. He doesn't want his ex wife to use marijuana against him. I'm sure he is still using marijuana, just not in public. How about just $2.99 for great e-book on medical marijuana: MARIJUANA - Guide to Buying, Growing, Harvesting, and Making Medical Marijuana Oil and Delicious Candies to Treat Pain and Ailments by Mary Bendis, Second Edition. This book has great recipes for easy marijuana oil, delicious Cannabis Chocolates, and tasty Dragon Teeth Mints.

I LOVE the BEATLES and Macca.  He was/is AMAZINGLY talented.  One of the BEST Song Writers and Bass Players (ANYBODY who doesn't think he wrote MANY Fantastic songs is Stone Deaf !).    And he USED to have an AMAZING singing Voice, too.

What wrecked his Voice and burned his Vocal cords was years of Toking on smoke and THC.

Smoking weed also Blocked his 3rd Eye (6th Chakra/Ajna) and cut off a lot of his connection with his Higher Self and his Muse. His songwriting is mostly CRAFT now and NOT inspiration.

Smoking Dope does NOT increase Memory.  It actually KILLS Memory Brain cells.

Cannabis is poison.  Even if it was legal, don't use it unless you want to screw yourself.

Be a REAL Nature Boy and get your Life Energy from the Eartth, and Sun and Air and Water. That's REAL Intoxication.

And leave your connection and Channel with GOD and your Higher Self Free and Clear. That's REAL Love.

A new study published by University of Leicester researchers [2009] has found "convincing evidence" that cannabis smoke damages DNA in ways that could potentially increase the risk of cancer development in humans.

The researchers add that the ability of cannabis smoke to damage DNA has significant human health implications especially as users tend to inhale more deeply than cigarette smokers, which increases respiratory burden. "The smoking of 3-4 cannabis cigarettes a day is associated with the same degree of damage to bronchial mucus membranes as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes a day," the team adds.

It's only YOUR opinion that there is only a ""possible" maybe" correlation ?!?!  Studies have shown that there is a DEFINITE correlation.

And yes, of course, ciggarette smoking is also Carcinogenic. But Tobacco does not fill the same Receptiors in the Brain as Marijuana does, causing Hallucinations and Paranoia.

More misinformation about a harmless plant.

And of course you're omitted the fact that regular cigarettes cause cancer to a FAR FAR greater degree than the tiny "possible" maybe correlation between marijuana and c cancer that has yet to be even proved.

NikkiTheBeat
NikkiTheBeat

Studies like the one you cited have been found to be DEFECTIVE and INconclusive.See below for comments by other scientists about conclusions similar to Tashkin's  :

"A recent epidemiologic study, however, does not support an association between marijuana smoking and oral or lung cancers. Sidney et al. undertook an epidemiologic study including almost 65 000 people in California to evaluate whether marijuana users are at an increased risk of cancer. This study did not find an association between marijuana use and total incidence of cancers at ALL sites, or between marijuana use and tobacco- related cancers EXCEPT FOR PROSTATE AND CERVICAL CANCERS.

However, the study's design had TWO CRITICAL DEFECTS. First, the criterion for regular marijuana smoking was more than six uses, and no subgroup analysis was done on the basis of smoking duration. Since cancer development requires that individuals be exposed to carcinogens for many years, the short-term or infrequent exposure measured in the study may not strongly influence the risk of cancer development. Second, smoking history of the study participants was obtained only once, at an average of 8.6 years before cancer incidence was analyzed. Therefore, it was unknown whether the smoking status had changed for these individuals during the rather long follow-up period. Therefore, the data reported in this study should not be deemed conclusive."

Tashkin's studies (2006) focused on Marijuana's effect on Lung vessels. His study did NOT discount the fact that there are other studies that have shown a correlation between Marijuana use and increased Prostate and Cervical Cancers.

And there STILL is correlation of Marijuana use and increased Cancer in Squamous cells in the Oral and Respiratory tract (ie. including the throat).

By the way... Tashkin refers to many properties in Marijuana as being "Carcinogens".Last I heard, the very definition of a "Carcinogen" means "CANCER causing".

GOD BLESS US ALL!PEACE & LOVE !

WRONG AGAIN.

The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer. The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years."We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."

Sigh. Pot did not harm Paul's voice. (1) His voice is aging because HE is aging. The man is 70 and he still sounds great in concert, although, as is to be expected at 70, some nights are better than others. And (2) the man is healthy as a horse. He's a walking advertisement for how harmless pot is.

NikkiTheBeat
NikkiTheBeat

ANY smoking is going to  eventually destroy your vocal chords. How old is Adele ?  23 yrs ?  It was her SMOKING (and a bit of the booze)that burned her throat and which created the lymph nodes on her vocal cordsthat she just recently had to have removed surgically.

If she doesn't stop smoking - even if it is legal tobacco - she will lose her voice, too,and it will be before she even reaches age 30 !

And look at Amy Winehouse...RIP.  It was the free basing/meth smoking  that burned her cords. She LOST her voice and wouldn't have been able to sing again in concert her last year.  GOD BLESS her she was Great, but she threw her voice (and life) away.

McCartney does not sound "great" anymore in concert.

Little Richard was able to hit those high notes of Long Tall Sally into his 70's,becuase he quit booze and drugs long ago.

McCartney can't do the Little Richard songs in concert anymore, and even has trouble singing the ballads on his latest "Kisses..." album.

Any energy that still sustains McCartney is due to the fact that he is a VEGGIE.THANK GOD !  It has a cleansing effect that's helping him DETOX the THC and keeping him Alive !

GOD BLESS US ALL !PEACE & LOVE !

You are so badly informed on so many counts I hardly know where to begin.

On his new album, he was INTENTIONALLY singing in a higher register to capture vulnerability in his voice. His singing on the album is terrific and is what makes the record interesting.

I have heard him in concert -- and he does INDEED sound terrific. Of course he doens't sound like he's 30 but then only a simplistic fool would expect that.

And you're ENTIRELY wrong about pot, exaggerating the facts about marijuana, and intentionally misreading the science. In people with schizophrenia, marijuana use can intensify symptoms , and research suggests it can bring on schizophrenia in some people who are PREDISPOSED to develop it. But the interaction is complicated: as marijuana use has INCREASED DRAMATICALLY in the population, schizophrenia rates have STAYED THE SAME. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Steven Tyler is turning 64 and sang the Medley from Abbey Road Live at the Kennedy Center last year and BLEW AWAY McCartney's vocals since he (McCartney) has been in his late 30's !  McCartney cleaned up his act and cut back on smoking when he had that Heart scare several years back, and his voice improved a bit for a while. But then he went back to his old ways of smoking more heavily again, and the voice further eroded.

And re his SUDDEN desire to become more responsible for his daughter, Beatrice. How concerned was he when he was hiding away toking on his Scottish Farmwhile he and Linda were bringing up 4 other children ?!?!  Interesting change of Heart. He knows if he gets busted again, that his money will not be able to buy him a Visa to visit or work in the USA again.  Not only will he not get the $ from concerts and appearances in the USA, but he will not be able to visit Beatrice in the USA, or Nancy's Family in NJ.

GOD BLESS US ALL !

So what. Most drugs are plants. Opium is a plant. Cocaine comes from a plant as well as benzos (vallerium root refined). I'm not against smoking pot. It's probably ok in small amounts as it relieves stress and helps people get a decent nights sleep. It should be legal. So far as it curing alzheimers or cancer though I really couldn't say but it's doubtful. I'm pushing 50 and have smoked my share. So far none of my friends has gotten alzheimers but several of them have gotten cancer. Common sense tells me that in moderation it's probably no big deal. Smoking it chronically is kind of a waste as it stops getting you high after several hits and your just burning money if your smoking kind bud even though it tastes good. I do believe that if you smoke pot all day every day you are consuming a lot of tar that will harm your lungs and coat your arteries. In moderation though I doubt it's that bad and several hits every few days is probably relatively inconsequential. As much as I like "pot", I can't really buy into the whole lunatic fringe claiming it's a cure all for everything from alzheimers to cancer.

Mrosin80
Mrosin80

A plant is a natural way to get high. Marijuana is a plant.

NikkiTheBeat
NikkiTheBeat

Why then, my friend, do MOST people that have been smoking Weed for a while, experience PARANOIA ?  And, of course, part of the reason that many people smoke weed is for the effect of HALLUCINATIONS and Distortion of Perception of Time and Space. (ie. of "Reality").  This may be (supposedly) short term, but it's Russian Roulette.

There are chemicals in Marijuana that fill receptors in the Brain that they were NOT meant to fill.  These "imposter" chemicals fill these Receptors and prevent the natural chemicals meant for the Receptors from getting in to their proper places, (this is simplification of the process for all of you Weed tokers out there). This causes mal-function of processing and produce effects such as Paranoia and Distortion of reality. One does not have to be PRE-disposed to experience this Damage.  It is just that those with a PRE-disposition may experience the long term / permanent  ill effects QUICKER.

Why take such a RISK by smoking these Dangerous chemicals ?You were Given a MIRACLE of Life and a Body to carry you along your Journey. Why not find more Natural and HEALTHY ways to get High and Enjoy and Enhance Life ?

LOVE & LIGHT !

It MAY act as a trigger -- in PEOPLE ALREADY PREDISPOSED TO HAVE SCHIZOPHRENIA.

But there's another new study that suggests it also may SUPPRESS the psychosis.

The jury is out when you're pretending to have final information. You're spreading FALSE information in your silly crusade.

NikkiTheBeat
NikkiTheBeat

Marijuana is being tested by the latest Australian research into the connection between cannabis and PSYCHOSIS.  It seems that marijuana use can act as a trigger for the progression of mental illness in some people. How this comes about is still being investigated, but it seems likely that cannabis alters the flow of a naturally occurring transmitter chemical in our brains. The same chemical, if it malfunctions, is linked with he development of schizophrenia. The program signals a warming for people at risk.

There have been a few reports that smoking marijuana long term COMPROMISES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. Professor Donald Tashkin, a respiratory physiologist with the UCLA School of Medicine, in California spoke at length of damage to highly specialised cells living in the lungs called macrophages and of his concerns about endorsing smoking marijuana for therapeutic gain.

I'm not interested in fame and only his money could be useful, but then I'm perfectly capable of making my own and living comfortably. Beyond that he has nothing which could be of use to me.

What I do take exception to is how millions of drooling idiots idolise him as if he actually had some kind of talent to speak of. His (and all the other pop stars like him) mere existence makes me despair for humanity.

Now, don't get me wrong, there are pop stars out there who actually have some talent, they're few and far between, but talent or not all the fuckwits will buy their horrid shit anyway and line the pockets of record company leeches just as long as these substance-less diddies are churning out their worthless garbage for them to consume.

McCartney was the original talentless pop star who could sell bullshit based on his association with the Beatles alone. If he'd been a solo artist nobody would know his name because he's fuckin shite. He's milking his past for all it's worth and all the numpties out there are buying any old shit he puts out because it's got his name on it.

There's no accounting for taste when absolute drivel will sell in the millions because of the brand it carries.

I've seen other amatuer musicians "hate" Paul and say similar things. I'm not a musician and have little knowledge of music other than what I like or dislike. Still, I have seen Paul play and he put on a good show. I agree with you that Paul didn't have the same message as John and clearly some of the lyrics like Pauls' in "A day in the Life" are somewhat cheesy.  He clearly plays almost every musical instrument at a high professional level though. Last time I saw him in 09 he had a small band. He played everything from guitar, bass, piano, ukelele and mandolin. There were only 3 or 4 other musicians on stage with him. It wasn't like a Who or Stones revival show where they had 12 - 15 musicians all over the stage to reproduce the sound they used to be able to produce with a small band. I would imagine that even though he's not John Lennon, some of his songs such as "Blackbird" and Yesteday as well as later Wings songs like "Venus and Mars", "Jet", "Band on The Run" and "Jr.'s Farm" would have been huge hits whether or not he was a Beatle. Clearly, being the "cute" Beatle definitly made him much more famous but I think he is a much better musician than you give him credit for. Hell, there are much bigger hacks then him and they don't get such haters. I don't disagree with you on his new music. I wouldn't buy it and don't care for what I've heard on the radio but at least to some extent we have to admit that he's 70 yrs old and most 70 year olds are just not at a creative point in their careers, hell, most are dead or retired.

And given the garbage John and Yoko pulled on Frank Zappa -- when they completely removed his name from the credits for live releases of tracks John and Yoko had performed with Frank Zappa and his band -- she had a lot of chutzpah to complain about this Lennon/McCartney credit issue, which NEVER affected Beatles records and was only for Paul's live album.

I thought the song was awful. His heart, however, was in the right place. That's why he organized and financed the Concert for New York for fire fighters and police. That's why proceeds from the DVD of the concert went to support 9/11 families. There was nothing exploitative about the song. Songwriters write songs about current events ALL the time. This happened to be a poor effort. But then the vast majority of 9/11 songs were awful, including Bruce Springsteen's tacky stadium rocker as well as those horrible songs by Alan Jackson and Toby Keith.

Sometimes a song works, sometimes it doesn't. This one didn't.

ElizaBro

Please reread my post because you are WRONG again. No he didn't try to change the credits on Beatles albums. EVER. It was purely for a live solo album of his. And the fact is, while Lennon was alive, McCartney DID put his name first on the credits of the 4 or 5 Beatles songs he performed on his live Wings Over America  album. And Lennon didn't care at all. Why would he?

Second, Lennon was the one who manipulated the situation early on to get his name first. The credits on every song on Please Please Me are "McCartney/Lennon" until Lennon appealed to Brian Epstein who pressured Paul because John wanted his name first. So I guess that makes Lennon a "cock," too, eh?

Or are they just artists protecting their work? And you are just a garden-variety troll who is amusing me briefly for an hour with your idiocy.
