Occupy My Street: S.F. Woman Starts Petition Against Out-of-Control Parking Tickets

The vehicle of oppression.
Drivers in San Francisco may rightly suspect they are merely rats in a giant SFMTA experiment designed to make them spit up as much money for parking tickets as possible before breaking down and buying a bike. Meeting went 10 minutes over? Ticket for you, buddy. Caught on camera blowing a red light? Your ticket is in the mail. Didn't turn you wheels toward the curb on an incline? It's all downhill for you.

Well, one lady behind the wheel isn't going to sit in the passenger seat anymore while SFMTA drives her into bankruptcy. San Francisco resident Caitlin Finnell started a petition called "Occupy My Street" with the hope of getting the 99 percent -- essentially, those of you who can't afford to pay your multiple $55 parking tickets -- to join together against the SFMTA's "underhanded taxing."

So far, Finnell has 17 signatures out of her 100 goal -- some of whom hail from as far away as Israel and Korea (tourists know the pain of driving in this town, too). After all, disarming the MTA is seemingly easier than trying to disarm Iran.

"To the 1 percent, shelling out $500 to $1,000 or more to get your car out of trouble is nothing," Finnell appeals. "To those of us who are of lower income, $1,000 can be more than a year's worth of working hard to save that money, and in an instant it is gone."

"We pay taxes already for the roads we drive on ... the Muni to run, for the meter maids and the Muni workers salaries ... and then we are being murderously overcharged and criminalized for violations."

So there you go, Occupiers; instead of taking to the street on foot, perhaps you should do it in an illegally parked car. That would be the true test of your gumption: after all, San Francisco is more willing to let a drum circle sit in the middle of Market than a Mazda.

Sign the petition here.

More people are joining the fight each day. Just say NO to all the city requests for funds and let your supervisor know how you feel.

Amazing write-up! This could aid plenty of people find out more about this particular issue. Are you keen to integrate video clips coupled with these? It would absolutely help out. Your conclusion was spot on and thanks to you; I probably won’t have to describe everything to my pals. I can simply direct them here!

How many times have you received a parking citation and yourticket says "cannot read" under the VIN information, but when you checked...you could clearly seethe last 4 digits of the VIN plate through your windshield with the naked eye!?Have you ever tried to protest such a parking citation?

Here's just one fact/example:  In 02/01/12, Officer TA (Badge #12) wrote 27 citations of which he said he “cannot read” the VIN plate information on all 27 of them.   Could that really be possible? Could we be certain that Officer TA actually got out of his vehicle, looked through the windshield and verified that all 27 VIN plates are 'unreadable'?

I found out that SFMTA is about to complete its Street Sweeping Camera PilotProject evaluation by this summer (see attachment) wherein it may ultimately decide to install front-facing cameras.  What this project doesn't address however is still the fact that SFMTA continues to allow some PCOs to violate CVC 40202(a) and its very own training manual and policies.In2011, SFMTA raked in $29 million in street sweeping citations alone!  http://www.7x7.com/arts-cultur...

With the Street Sweeping Camera Pilot Project, it will undoubtedly add more revenue for SFMTA.

I just started a petition in change.org:

http://www.change.org/petition...

Please help us publicize this petition now and force SFMTA to FIRST follow the law before makingmore money out of us!

Thank you.

parking tickets are a tax on stupidity and laziness. i am rarely in favor of any tax, but i really don't mind this one. my only complaint is that the funds go to union pensions not well maintained streets and top notch public transportation.

After living in San Francisco for 12 years, my wife and I finally bought a car. (because we were moving and knew we would need it)  We knew the risks of having it in the city, but decided it was worth it in the long run.  After a year of car ownership in the city limits, we received not a single ticket...not because we could afford to pay anyone off, but because we were on top of things and at times....lucky.

Does anyone really believe that S.F. City employees' carshave the same vulnerable status as the rest of us?

I get parking tickets just like everyone else, and it's an expensive pain in the ass.

That being said, I can read the signs just fine and every ticket I've gotten I've deserved.  So what's the point of this protest?  Eliminate all parking restrictions?  I'd rather have tickets than that.

(I did get out of one ticket, once, because a cop wrote it and forgot to put the code section on. Yep, I got off on a technicality.  Still felt good, though.)

The point is not about NOT getting tickets anymore, the point is that the fee's of the tickets and fee's associated with other violations have sky rocketed to the point, where for low income individuals, literally it could make or break them. Low income people should be allowed to mess up occasionally just like the rest of us and not have that mean that they will loose their car to the city or have their credit ruined by not being able to pay the astronomical fees.

Those "low income individuals" are more than likely on the bus being delayed by the double parker you are trying to protect.

If you can't afford a small fine, you should obey the law.

'Small' fine ?  I don't know what city you live in but SF eliminated small fines years ago. If you get a ticket in this town, you're going to get gouged.

MrEricSir

Quit whining.  If you can't afford the fines, you can't afford the rent either.

Wow, way to completely ignore everything I said in this thread.  Did you forget how to read?

Yeah so make sure poor people can afford to have cars or live in the city. Kick those poor saps out of SF. A city is obviously only for people with money!! Duh.

That doesn't mean they should get a free pass.

Personally I'd rather see a progressive fee structure where it's based on your income level, but that seems unlikely to ever happen.

Yes, where do we sign the petition? I was given a street cleaning ticket while my car was in motion and I was driving!!! The meter maid put it under my hood and drove away quickly!

Where do I sign up? Between two college kids who live in San Francisco, I've probably dumped several thousand dollars in parking tickets. One parking enforcement (I'd call him/her something stronger but I don't want to be flamed) targeted my daughter's car so many times (even after she'd move it several times in a day) that we finally had to sell the car.

'Several thousand dollars in parking tickets'????? With all due respect, that tells me that your kids aren't very smart and u are even dumber for allowing it to continue. I really hope that is a huge exaggeration...

Maybe just take away the keys if they can't learn how to park?
