Gold Dust Lounge: Popular S.F. Bar Gets Booted from Union Square

The only good excuse for a local to go to Union Square

The landmark Gold Dust Lounge is being evicted on March 10 to make way for yet another Union Square retailer. News of the iconoclastic dive's demise hit the community hard, and grassroots efforts to save the popular watering hole has quickly sprouted.

The news was confirmed on the bar's Twitter feed today, with the Gold Dust Lounge pleading for locals to help save the historic bar, which has been serving up cocktails to locals and tourists since 1906.

Here's a tweet sent out by the bar earlier today: "What can you do now? Just follow us and share the news. We are working hard to put together a plan to help the bar survive."

The community has already started a Facebook page dedicated to saving the dive bar, known for harboring the ghost of Herb Caen. In addition, there is an online petition being circulated, protesting plans for The Limited clothing store to move into the spot at 247 Powell.

I am disappointed in "the powers that be" who are so greedy and have fallen into the same trap of self before community, you have no conscience. I had greater expectations of what I thought was a forward thinking community. Once the Gold Dust is gone -it will only be a memory those of us who have had the pleasure to experience its magic. OMG you have got to be kidding. The powers that be are closing 'The Gold Dust Lounge' established in our fair city in 1906. And replace it with a prototype kardashian retail store that sell goods manufactured in a 3rd world country.

I have been to the Gold Dust twice. Each time it was full mainly of tourists who just wanted a nearby place to grab a drink--not that there is any lack of options for finding a place to drink downtown. I didn't find anything charming, historic or interesting about it. Bars, restaurants, stores, etc. come and go. Sometimes they last a 100 years, sometimes 1 year and that is the nature of commerce. There is no public obligation for any private entity to give its property or other resources to another private entity The building belongs to someone else and they are free to do whatever they so choose with it. The Gold Dust can relocate, or it can close.
