Weed Wars: Watch a 5-Year Old Use Medical Marijuana Tonight

If it makes parents tolerable ...
A few common schools of thought persist in the medical marijuana debate -- on one end, doubters point to young men at dispensaries and say that the drug is widely abused by people who are "not that sick." On the other hand, believers say that you don't need to be on death's door to benefit from medicine. And isn't Oxycontin prescription heroin, anyway?

A scene bound to engender even more controversy over medical marijuana will be broadcast on national television tonight, when a father will administer medical marijuana to his 5-year-old epileptic son for the first time in front of film crews for the Discovery Channel's Weed Wars.

Proposition 215 recommendations and marijuana use have been good enough reasons for Child Protective Services to take children away from their pot-smoking parents. So then, is giving an admittedly sick kid pot on TV such a good idea?

As its PR machine informed the world, Weed Wars followed around the world of Harborside Health Center for a few months, filming a day in the life of the nation's largest cannabis dispensary and its charismatic CEO, Steve DeAngelo.

In this case, DeAngelo's crew recommended medical marijuana for a desperate "single father", Jason, whose son, Jayden, began experiencing hour-long seizures at the age of four months. The child is given what some might call the devil's weed via a few drops of CBD-laden tincture administered under the tongue. CBD, we may remind you, is the cannabinoid that is associated with non-intoxicating, healing properties; the medical student to its partying roommate, THC.

The first episode aired last week, and the second comes on tonight at 10 on the Discovery Channel. Check your local listings, or break down and order cable (or, like us, just get to know someone who has it).

Tales of children who are hospitalized after inadvertently eating marijuana-laden brownies or cookies have been in the mainstream media recently. But often neglected in the marijuana debate is whether -- like Ritalin -- medical cannabis is okay for children to consume.

In fact, it was the specter of kids smoking pot legally that caused opponents of the drug to pounce in 1996, when Prop. 215 was passed. And indeed, stiff criminal penalties for those using pot in front of children have been floated even by medical marijuana advocates -- included in Prop. 19 last year, supported by DeAngelo, for example.

However, at least one other sick child -- 2-year-old Cash Hyde who suffered a brain tumor -- has been given medical cannabis as a healing agent -- and it worked, according to his father

So if a father's last resort was medical marijuana and it worked to heal his son, what's the harm?

Tune in at 10 tonight., or skip the who thing and go straight to calling Jason a bad dad and us bad bloggers.

Marijuana is by far the worst drug on the planet and for small kids! People that use crack are safer to our society

Although Marijuana is a illegal drug but i think it has a lot of benefits for health as I know youth have the problem of depressing and migraines , stress so marijuana is one of the solution but it is not my personal experience.

A dispensary doesn't "recommend" cannabis for patients, doctors do. Turns out, you are bad bloggers!

As the show details quite well, his son suffers from frequent epileptic seizures of long duration. Whether as a parent or a sibling, it's difficult to watch a close relative deal with epilepsy on a daily basis, not just because of the seizures themselves but the drug regimens used to combat them, which raise their own issues of side effects and long-term toxicity.

This shows us that medicine doesn't need to be an either-or proposition, with the doctors and the pharmaceutical companies having the last say. Nontoxic cannabis can be used as a complementary or alternative source of healing as doctors continue to practice their art and science using the best tools of western medicine at their disposal.

When everyone agrees that the goal should be a positive health outcome for the patient, we can stop worrying about the FDA and the DOJ for just a moment and let doctors and patients do the driving. You can't legislate health any better than you can legislate morality.

According to an article in the winter 2011 edition of California Pediatrician magazine the incidence of youth use in States with medicinal cannabis patient protection laws has not seen any statistically significant increases. Remember, Michigan passed their patient protection law on Election Day 2008 and it wasn't implemented until April of 2009.

Medicinal methamphetamine, AKA Desoxyn®, is FDA approved for school children as young as age 6. I would provide links but evidently SF Weekly doesn't allow that.

Cigarettes/tobacco products clearly cause Cancer and Death and yet they are still sold legally...and the Govt has made butt-loads of money. It's high time (pun intended) they wake up and accept the fact that God created a seed bearing plant (Genesis 1:11, 12) that can be used for healing vs killing.....yeah yeah, I know, seedless is better...but the Mama/Papa plant starts with a seed...

More power to Harborside Health Center for caring enough, and having the guts to do it right and fight the mighty fight. GOD BLESS!

Wait a minute. Are they going to interview the kid's doctor? It is only legal if the doctor recommended it. Oh yeah, no THC means it isn't pot. Right... of course.

this is article is highly misleading.

Nice misleading headline of a child smoking MJ, and nice pic from back in the 70s of the kids of a religious group whose sacrament is MJ smoking it up.

Thanks for the misleading headline.  You clearly state that the kid will 'smoke' medical marijuana, then in the article admit it will be a few drops of tincture with a non-intoxicating agent from the drug.  Sounds pretty medically sound.  Oh well, you got a click.  guess that's all that matters...

Duncan20903
Duncan20903

The really sad thing is that the headline is almost certainly the result of ignorance. It's simply stunning just how many people believe that smoking is required to gain the benefits for either medicinal need or just plain enjoyment.

We also need to note that the headline was changed. Article writers don't usually write the headlines. Like I said, just an ignorant editor that didn't know the facts and didn't bother with any of that annoying fact checking.

There are two kinds of people when it comes to Cannabis…

…those that un-knowingly (only to themselves and their peer group) regurgitate the the meme (or mind virus), or "conventional wisdom" conveniently provided to them via a well-planned course of indoctrination…including advertising campaigns like, "Just Say No", or "This is your brain on drugs" (with a frying egg in a pan as a comparison to what Cannabis does to the brain) and the latest one to hit the TV airwaves, "Above the influence".

and the other kind of Cannabis people,

…those that know the truth.

The difference is education about the subject at hand.

PS Guess what, it helps if you've achieved a mental, emotional and spiritual status that allows you to be "above the influence" of self-appointed indoctrinators. ;)

PPS Conscientiously Consuming Cannabis helps achieve the above, (or so I was told ;)

Triple - PS …and now you know one of the REAL reasons they don't want you consuming cannabis (not to mention the outstanding health benefits to your body's own natural endocannabiniod system…if you're consuming healthy plants that is ;

Afterthought: I can't wait to hear the reasoning that GW Pharmaceuticals and the FDA give when they introduce a cannabis product called Sativex...for medicinal reasons.

I can't tell you how many times I ended up at Denny's for a Grand Slam breakfast after seeing that commercial in the wee hours.

This is your brain: {{{}}}

This is your brain on prohibition: {null}

Any questions?

That ad about "your brain on drugs" was based on a seriously flawed study that claimed the brains of monkeys used in the study showed deterioration after continued use. To achieve these aims (that was the purpose, to show negatives) they put a mask over the monkeys nose and mouth and piped in an extremely high concentration of smoke for long durations of time. This was repeated constantly, with little time in between for breathing. Since your brain cells will die off after only a couple of minutes of being totally depleted of oxygen, of course brain cells died off. It had nothing to do with the cannabis or the smoke. It was forced lack of oxygen.

I certainly wish they'd get it done. I'm getting tired of waiting for my shares of GWP to skyrocket.
