Steve Jobs Statue to Be Erected in Hungary

Cities often lay claim to the legacy of a great cultural figure by erecting a statue in his honor. Dublin has its monument to James Joyce, famously referred to by locals as "the Prick with the Stick." San Francisco has its statue of celebrated hometown nutcase Emperor Norton, which is lodged, appropriately enough, in a bar.

There is no shortage of admirable statues in Budapest, Hungary. But it looks like a new face is soon to join the Magyar pantheon: late Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Hungarian tech company Graphisoft has commissioned a bronze statue of Jobs that will be unveiled Dec. 21. As the Associated Press reports:

Hungarian sculptor Erno Toth's statue depicts Jobs with all his trademark characteristics -- a mock turtleneck, jeans and sneakers, round glasses and well-trimmed stubble.

The nearly 7-foot-tall statue weighing 220 kilograms (485 pounds) will be placed in Graphisoft Park, a Budapest complex home to several high-tech businesses.

Given the magnitude of the tributes to Jobs following his death in October, we're guessing that some larger statues of the former Apple CEO are yet to be unveiled (see monument to late North Korean dictator Kim Il-Sung, above).

A simplistic, silly, and incomplete story, so here is the rest of the story:

Graphisoftconsiders Steve Jobs the greatest hero of information age,” the company said ina statement. Graphisoft said Mr. Jobs played a major role in the global successof Graphisoft's architectural design software, which is called ArchiCAD.

The first version of the design software ran on a Lisa computer, thepredecessor to Macintosh. Mr. Jobs saw a demonstration of ArchiCAD at an ITexhibition in Hannover, Germany, in 1984, and decided to give Apple’s fullsupport to its development and distribution, including Apple computers and software, which were given to this new, struggling company.

A Steve Ballmer water fountain statue would be cool. But rather than spitting or peeing, the water would spray out of the armpits.

The guy was a genius, but he was an egocentric asshole. If anything Bill and Melinda Gates deserves statues for taking their money, pumping it in to charities, and even creating one of their own.

He was another 1960s hippie who sold out to the system aka the establishment.

Steve Jobs doesn't deserve a statue. He didn't do anything exceptional that benefited humankind or this world. He's a nice person and a good businessman but there are so many others that deserve the same honor if not more than what he got.
