Justin Herman Plaza is 100 percent free of the 99 percent
Police stormed into the Occupy SF camp early this morning, arresting more than 70 protesters and breaking down the encampment on Justin Herman Plaza.

Media outlets are reporting that police and fire crews circled the camp at about 1 a.m., giving protesters five minutes to pack up and go. Many campers left, however a group remained at the camp and were later arrested when they blocked Market Street, police told reporters.

About 70 people were arrested on suspicion of illegal camping, and two more were arrested on suspicion of assault after they threw a metal chair at a police officer.

Public Works crews spent the morning power washing the plaza, where protesters had been camped out for more than two months. Meanwhile, Occupy SF has agreed to meet at noon today to discuss plans for a general strike.

The city had offered to relocate the camp to a less visible spot in the Mission District, but protesters refused to leave, saying they wanted to be next to the big banks they were protesting.

Mayor Ed Lee issued the following statement to the press:

From the beginning of the current Occupy SF encampment, I have made it clear to protesters that overnight camping at Justin Herman Plaza and on Market Street is not a sustainable or safe environment for protesters, the general public or City staff. In San Francisco, we took a measured and balanced approach and negotiated with Occupy leadership in good faith to disassemble the camp at Justin Herman Plaza. The City made a site available to the group, but unfortunately, communication with the liaison team designated by Occupy SF deteriorated to a point where it was clear that no progress could be made.
We'll keep you posted as the drama unfolds. Check back later.

What legal right does the Fed have to occupy their building?  The constitution gives Congress the authority to print money--not a private institution.

@novenator They had plenty of time to leave to prevent their personal property from being damaged; you forfit your rights when you break the law and that is how it should be.

Well then, if they forfeit their rights, the cops should just rape and kill them after taking their cash, right?  They knew what was coming when the BROKE THE LAW!!!!11zz

They're breaking a law that doesn't personally harm anyone to bring public and media attention to the laws that do harm the bulk of people financially. Maybe you would like them to hire a few full-time lobbyists to make the same case for them in Washington, but I am not an idiot and I realize the protester are only doing what they feel they can do with their limited finances and political connections. So instead of bitching about the poor and middle-class trying to have their voice heard in America since "The New Deal" was crafted, how about you donate a little of your time and your money to their cause?

Just because you don't physically harm anyone doesn't make it okay to keep camping out and being a public nuisance.  Protesting is one thing, but making downtown SF your new public home is another.  The Police need to shoot these campers 24/7 until they go away.  If they want to protest, protest while standing up and walking down the streets.  Don't block businesses and don't live there.

@Average IQ Why was the law created then? For shits and giggles? Clearly at some point in time the law was created for a reason. @yahoo-KKY5QEQ4AX3EZ5IEDY5UTB6OOQ:disqus - I couldn't agree with you more, its all about "Sticking it to the man...." It's nuts, get up, try and find a job, do whatever... You are the only one who can change your life.

This was the largest #Occupy occupation in the country after NYC, LA, and Oakland were brutally shut down (not to mention the violent raids in dozens of cities around the nation).  They deliberately slashed up perfectly good tents, threw new bikes into trash compactor trucks, and destroyed a lot of other personal property too.

Standard hippy mentality.  Always "The Man's" fault.  You're instructed to leave because you are a burden on society, take the hint, pack up your commercialized crap (that's right, you all buy into the very same issue you're so helplessly trying to fight), and get outta town.

In Toronto, city workers, today, are having to completely rebuild the park that the hippies used to camp out in.  Are any of the hippies donating any money towards rebuilding the park they destroyed?  Not at all.  Why?  Not their problem, says the hippies.  Rejects.

Don't be an idiot. There was no significant damage, and even inflated "cleanup" costs are about 1 billionth of the money the big bankers cost us when the crashed the economy.

Haha, oh man. Another asshole who misses the whole point of the protests in the first place. "You dirty hippies, with your lack of money. Why aren't you donating to clean up the parks you are forced to protest in since no one will give you the media attention anywhere else." Uhhh...because they have no money. Duh, that's what this whole ideological movement is about.

I live in SF and work right next to Justin Herman plaza, these protesters are neither a burden nor are they impeding the work flow of the financial district. And somehow making cardboard signs and sitting around in filth and shitty tents makes them "the 1%" they are protesting? Not quite understanding your logic, or I should say, you're lack of logic.

Bill Gates
Bill Gates

These protestors are "clutter" and are like trash that's piling up on the streets, making downtown look unpleasant.  I personally think the 90% of the protestors are losers who constantly complain about entitlements instead of trying to make something of themselves.

Don't like the banks?  Don't like how they received the unfair bailouts?  Neither do I.  So withdraw all of your money and take your business elsewhere.  That's how you make a statement, not by camping out like rodents in the street, stinking up the place.  Camping out proves nothing.

So you say you still have a problem and want to protest?  Fine, go ahead and protest..but do it during business hours and at night, go home or go somewhere else.  Come back the next morning and continue to protest while STANDING with picket signs instead of camping inside a stupid tent.
