Update: At 9:30 a.m., the port sent workers home for the day. Occupy Oakland is claiming a victory. A march to the port from the West Oakland BART stop is scheduled for 5 p.m. The intent, according to Occupy Oakland's Twitter feed, is to shut down the port's night shift. (One Tweet recommends marchers bring sleeping bags.)

Update (8:05 a.m.): It's started to rain, but that's not deterring this group. A handful of protesters carrying an Occupy UC Davis banner has walked farther into the port.

Original Story (7:06 a.m.): As expected, hundreds of Occupy Oakland protesters have marched to the Port of Oakland in hopes of shutting it down as part of its movement to demonstrate against the 1 percent.

SF Weekly's Kate Conger is at the scene and tells us that protesters have blocked the gates to the port, as the crowd chants "Whose port? Our port." By 6:30 a.m. the crowd grew to 400 marching at Seventh and Middle Harbor Road. Police in riot gear arrived and are attempting to drive through the crowd. Protesters are shouting "Pigs go home."

A driver in an 18-wheeler also tried to drive through the crowd, honking his horn in frustration, we assume. A bus full of police in riot gear are attempting to break up the crowd.

Port officials sent out a statement saying the protesters are causing sporadic disruptions to business this morning.

He's back!
"One week ago the Port of Oakland sent a message to all of our stakeholders throughout this region to Keep Our Port Open. This was in response to the call to shut down our port once again. We said it then, and we'll say it now -- closing the port is a bad idea," Port officials said in a statement this morning.
