Occupy Oakland Ambushes Mayor Jean Quan at Community Forum

This picture just sums it up
You can take Occupy protesters out of the streets, but you cannot take the streets out of the protesters. Occupy Oakland folks stormed a Commonwealth Club meeting last night in San Francisco where the very unpopular Mayor Jean Quan was a sitting panelist.

The club had arranged a panel to speak about what's next for the controversial Occupy Oakland movement, which was booted from its camp site on Frank Ogawa Plaza last month. But protesters used that as an opportunity not to discuss its future, but rather to rail on Quan over the past.

KTVU reports that the panel was "barely seated before Quan became a target and some audience members were thrown out of the room."

Protesters didn't seem keen to talk about what's next for the movement; rather, they were ready to lay into Quan for how she handled Occupy Oakland and the police tactics (pepper spray, flash-bang grenades) used to remove the camp.

Members in the crowd began shouting and chanting "liar" at Quan, who didn't budge. Quan finally responded, defending herself: "What the nation saw was a small group of anarchists break windows."

But the heckling continued as audience members started yelling "mic check" over Quan, who finally disappeared behind closed doors.

"I've been in tougher situations," Quan told reporters. "I've been bullied before, but I thought this was a chance to be positive. I tried to talk and they wouldn't let me."

Oakland needs a  real mayor, she is a joke and she needs to be confronted for her cowardliness

Wow, this article is so full of inaccuracies, I don't know where to start. The very first person to speak out of turn was Jean Quan herself. The moderator was asking questions to specific individuals and they would answer them. For the most part the audience was responding with "twinkles" or "upside down twinkles" (whatever those are called). Sure there was some moans and groans. But then, Quan insisted that she respond directly to something another panelist said rather than waiting until the moderator asked her a question. She was mic checked a full 35 minutes into the program, so the assertion that the "panel was barely seated" is just a bold-faced lie. KTVU was there, so I'm not sure why they wrote that lie. But shame on you for not watching the whole thing (available at http://oaklandlocal.com/posts/.... Seriously, this is just laaaazy reporting.

Please be accurate. Not pepper spray. Teargas. FIve separate teargas attacks on totally peaceful protesters at 14th & Broadway on the evening of Oct 25; following the predawn teargas and rubber bullet attack on a sleeping camp while the mayor was out of town gladhanding in Washington.

Teargas, riot baton attacks, beanbag bullet attacks of citizens simply videoing police, and many other violent incidents that didn't even make the papers. Some I saw with my own eyes. All in direct violation of Oakland's own crowd control policies.

I only wish I lived in Oakland so I could sign the recall petition.

Funny how these idiots who go around talking about free speech refuse to allow it in others.

I support the mayor and find these occupy people to be a bad joke.

I am a little confused by the Occupy Oakland Group - have they done their research about some of the truckers that pull containers out of the port?  It is bad enough that the State of California is imposing new rules for their trucks and the have to spend money they don't have to comply, then they lose days of work because of this group.  I know a trucker who had to sell his house during this hard economic time and is barely keeping his company afloat.  Losing a couple days work cost him and his workers money and food on their table.  Go occupy the financial district or stand in front of a bank.  Stop taking work from people who can't afford to lose a days pay.  Had to say my piece even though it doesn't count for much.

Union truckers still got paid that day. Non-union truckers are being fired for wearing Teamsters shirts to work.

Occupy Oakland is as confused as a group as confused gets (hence the disruption instead of talking), so don't be too hard on yourself for not understanding them. There's nothing to understand: Occupy Oakland is a bunch of losers, bums, and spoiled children throwing tantrums because they can't have what they want without working for it.

So you are saying that since there is no work, that is why they protest? Maybe they could spend their time doing something positive and productive that actually helps people.

She needs to look in the mirror and decide if she's happy with the person she sees.

Mayor you have lied and changed your story enough. It comes a point where you must simply go away and realize you have lost your mandate to lead. Why would they sit and listen to yet more excuses and another different side to your story ? you have made no efforts to work within the opportunities Occupy has given you, nor respondend to the mainstream media with anything other than arrogance. Admit you were wrong, step down, and Then you can speak whatever side of the story you want.

Jean Quan is a joke. She had her chance to be the revolutionary she likes to think of herself as, and she pumped the chicken switch. She had nothing to offer them, so shouting her down and sending her packing was the right idea. Shames the aim, not negotiation.
