Margarita Mojica: Judge to Announce Ruling in Pregnant Woman's Death
| Stay tuned until tomorrow |
Sanjay Sakhuja, owner of Digital Pre-Press International, and Alick Yeung, the pressroom manager, are charged with involuntary manslaughter and violation of labor laws which led to Mojica's death.
On Jan. 29, 2008, Mojica was preparing a box creasing and cutting machine to start a job at the Potrero Hill plant. She was leaning into the machine when it suddenly activated, and closed on her. It was 20 minutes before firefighters could rescue her from the machine.
Prosecutors argued that the workers were not properly trained to make sure the equipment was shut down. They also argued that the company executives, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, failed to follow safety procedures or conduct regular inspections.
Mojica was 17 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. Her husband filed a wrongful death lawsuit, which was settled for $6 million.
