Dutch Marijuana Tourism to End in 2013

Still debating the hash merits.
When news that Dutch police had raided the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam this year filtered back to the United States, the reaction was a mixture of shock, outrage, and outright disbelief. Surely, even with a center-right government, the laissez-faire Dutch weren't locking up peaceful pot-smokers in what's been the international capital of cannabis use (sorry, Oakland) for decades?

As it turns out: No, they weren't. It was a permitting snafu that led police to visit the High Times Cup, which was allowed to continue in peace -- peace that included attendees happily passing joints back and forth in front of smiling police officers, according to reports.

This kind of lax enforcement won't last for long, however. Dutch officials announced this week a plan to finally, once-and-for-all close its famed "cannabis coffee shops" to tourists.

But no need to hurry to Holland -- the country-wide closure won't go into effect until 2013, and there's no serious effort to recriminalize possession of five grams or less.
Dutch coffee shops will in 2013 become "closed cannabis clubs," according to Agence-France Presse, limited to 2,000 members or less. They can still accept foreigners -- however, those foreigners must be residents of Holland. Other Europeans -- French, Germans, Brits, even the Swiss! -- are all out.

The law barring tourists from clubs in select Dutch provinces goes into effect on Jan. 1, but even those clubs have a "grace period" of five months to figure out a "new administrative system" that somehow keeps foreigners out (training the bouncer to recognize a U.K. or U.S. passport?). In the meantime, the rest of the country -- including the province of North Holland, where Amsterdam is located -- has until January 2013 to phase out cannabis tourism.

Which means that attendees of at least the 2012 Cannabis Cup can visit coffee shops around town if the offerings at the event aren't up to snuff -- and they can still blaze away in peace in 2013 and beyond, barring a complete change of fortune in the Low Country. Even in front of a cop.

Amsterdam is still the place to go if you want to toke up! I was there on 4:20 International smokers holiday. At the Amsterdam Smoke out. Many people from all over the world came to celebrate the freedom of smoking and i can tell you that Amsterdam is still allowing tourists in the cofeeshops. Here are some pictures of the event: http://www.amsterdamcannabis.co.uk/amsterdam-smoke-out-2013-was-a-success/    As you can see it was packed with people smoking! Right now spring is starting and there is a whole layer of smoke hanging above amsterdam again. In the South of the Netherlands, coffeeshops are slowly opening their doors to tourists again. I think Amsterdam wouldn't be Amsterdam if it wasn't for the freedom of smoking!

Our Nation and our Constitution are constantly under attack from misguided, self-righteous neo-puritans and degenerate, authoritarian demagogues whose ignorant and irrational minds traverse a fantasy plane of existence in search of the absurd and unattainable utopia of an addiction/drug/risk free society.

Try this simple Google search: "Fatty foods may be just as addictive as heroin and cocaine."

On July 9, 2009, the California Center for Public Health Advocacy (CCPHA) released 'The Economic Costs of Overweight, Obesity and Physical Inactivity Among California Adults'. The study found that the cost of obesity and physical inactivity had climbed to $41 billion in 2006, nearly double the amount reported in 2000.

Does this mean that we should now target fat people for persecution and mass incarceration? Or that we should hand the market in Twinkies and Ding Dongs to street punks, Mexican cartels, and the terrorists of al-Qaeda?

"There are 100,000 total Ding Dong consumers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and Activists. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from Ding Dong usage. These Ding Dongs cause white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes and entertainers."

"Ding Dongs lead to pacifism and communist brainwashing."

"Ding Dongs are the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind."

"You eat a Ding Dong and you're likely to kill your brother."

- Harry J. Anslinger  ..

Ding Dongs are a gateway food: They impair a person's ability to make healthy choices. They may lead directly to Ho Hos, Ben and Jerry's, and cheese cake! - Are you listening FDA? This is outrageous! CREAM FILLINGS ARE A SCAM!!!  -- You literally couldn't dream this s**t up!

In california you are legally allowed to grow 99 plants for personal use! What kinda joke is this? Just legalise it fully! Think of tax revenue etc that would be rased!! Could almost pull the entire western world out of recession! As for the argument that stoners cause hassle, if you are baked you cannot be arsed to do anything other than eat and watch rubbish on tv. Whats the harm? Why is alcohol so tolerated? It causes more harm than any other drug, destroys families, and has killed people. Cannabis on the other hand has never killed anyone! And has single handedly kept haribo sweets in buisness for years!!!

The criminal mob is actually looking fwd. to this. Finally they will be able to control the prices again and sell illegally in the streets. On top of that, no more taxes to pay on cannabis. Well guess who will profit: criminal structures. The supply is there and it will be sold, believe me, I am from Holland and I have been observing the Cannabis trade (legal and illegal) for over 20 years we finally got rid of the so called "private adresses" where weed was sold illegally in large quantities, now we'll get em back, Nice, as they were selling for half the price the legal shops did. This decision is so dumb, immature and unreflected, just makes me angry.

I find it hard to believe that the DEA  police, prison and big Pharma Cartels are not behind the evils the prohibitionist want  as their snouts will no longer be welcomed in the Govt. trough.

In the meantime, Switzerland will have legal pot for personal use with up to 4 plants per person allowed, Copenhagen's lawmakers have voted to allow government run cannabis retail stores, and the Basque Parliament has signaled that the days of the stupidity of absolute prohibition in their region are numbered.

In the meantime American prohibitionists crow over the fact that Holland won't tolerate foreigners coming into their country and insulting their people with tourist Euros anymore. No mention of returning to the utter failure of absolute prohibition but you sure couldn't tell that from listening to those who embrace proven failure as public policy.

If the DEA wasn't such a bunch of jerks, we could have this in Oakland.  Because, trust me, our city leaders are ready and willing!
