Kelly Slater Wins Surfing World Title -- For Real This Time
| Twice the winner |
Slater clinched the title (for real) four days after the Association of Surfing Professionals miscalculated, mistakenly awarding him the 2011 world championship. The group recanted and apologized, stating that Slater would have to win one more heat before he was actually declared the champ.
And win he did.
More than 2,000 fans gathered at Ocean Beach on Sunday under cloudy skies to watch Slater advance out of round four, moving into the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro Search, making him officially the top surfer in the world.
"I'm stoked. I was upset about it at first, but I also thought it was really funny," Slater told ESPN Sunday about the miscalculation. "No hard feelings with ASP. Mistakes do happen. We all make mistakes. It's just the way it happens."
