Emily Dunn Update: Will Muni Driver be Charged with Death of San Francisco Woman?

Emily Dunn was killed by a Muni bus

It's been more than three months since a Muni driver hit and killed 23-year-old Emily Dunn as she walked through the Castro on a sunny summer day. Police investigators say they forwarded the case to the District Attorney's Office last week, yet no charges have been filed at this time.

According to Omid Talai, deputy district attorney, prosecutors aren't ready to make any decisions about whether to file charges or not."We have received material from SFPD, however, we've requested more information and follow-up from them in order to make a better informed decision," Talai told us.

However, he wouldn't elaborate about what sort of information they were looking for.

Meanwhile, Supervisor Scott Wiener, who represents the Castro District where Dunn had been walking when she was killed, said he's anxious to get some resolution to this tragic incident.

"I'm very very interested in the investigation -- it has been a long time, and I'm definitely frustrated with the amount of time it has taken," Wiener told us. "I don't want to interfere with the police investigation, but I made it clear I would like the investigation to be completed so we have some results."

The Aug.19 death rocked the tight-knit Castro neighborhood, which is flooded with pedestrians walking at all hours of the day. Dunn, a Georgia native who had just moved to San Francisco, was walking across the street at Hartford and 18th at about 2:30 p.m. when the Muni bus hit her. Dunn was 90 percent across the crosswalk when the side of the bus struck her.

She died at the scene.

The bus driver, who was placed on nondriving status, had been instructed to take his bus out of service and reroute it to the Castro to supplement the F line. However, the control center apparently did not give the operator directions or a specific route from the Financial District where he was to the Castro for his new assignment.

Muni was investigating to see who -- if anyone -- dropped the ball.
