Duct Tape -- Learn to Master It

Duct tape may not make the world go 'round, but it does hold it together

​What better gift than the gift of duct tape? Perhaps MacGyver's blond, feathery mullet isn't back in style -- but his adhesive of choice is. And, thanks to a crap economy, it's sticking in ways it never stuck before.

Library patrons will be offered the chance to learn the art of crafting tchotchkes out of duct tape, a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the United States' new duct tape-based economy.

Librarian Jewel Chen will train patrons wishing to make duct tape coin pockets, wallets, or a card holder of the sort people allow to dangle at groin level, even on public transportation, where an identity badge is not needed.   

Chen says these items are appropriate for gifting. She's even given coin holders to her aunt and uncle. Though it's beyond the scope of this beginning class, Chen is currently making a duct tape handbag.

While duct tape may be unsuitable for ducts -- yes, really -- it's good for more than just practical gifts. It turns out many artistically inclined people have seen the wonders duct tape has to offer. Duct tape cars! Duct tape prom! Duct tape Edvard Munch!

​Perhaps a course instructing one on how to create a duct tape image of the New York subway system will come at a future date. In the meantime, Chen is focusing on the coin pocket, wallet, and card holder. And, for budding duct tape artisans, she suggests using the Duck Tape brand, as the dollar store stuff is too thin.

Chen's course will be held on Friday, Dec. 9 and Friday, Dec. 16 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Chinatown Branch Library. Yes, those are working hours -- but folks making duct tape gifts may or may not be working. Participation is limited to 15 students per session -- Chen is providing each of you with a roll of duct tape, and duct tape ain't free.
