Newsweek Retracts Pelosi Quote Slamming Obama, White House
|Nancy Pelosi might have some choice words for Obama, but those aren't them|
"I think you need to talk about how poorly they do on message," she was quoted as saying to reporter Howard Kurtz, speaking of White House officials. "They can't see around corners; they anticipate nothing."
No sooner had the story appeared, however, than Pelosi's office began contesting its accuracy. Now Newsweek has published a correction admitting that Pelosi never said what Kurtz claimed she did.
"An earlier version of the story included a comment erroneously attributed to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, criticizing the White House's efforts at political messaging. Newsweek and The Daily Beast regret the error," the correction reads.
Daily Beast spokesman Andrew Kirk told Politico that the error occurred because Kurtz misread notes of an interview that someone else conducted, mistakenly attributing words to Pelosi that weren't hers. It's the second such error Kurtz has made in the past year.
The upshot? For the time being, Obama and Pelosi can maintain their tenuous relationship as frenemies, rather than becoming outright foes.
