Fans Ask 49ers to Make "It Gets Better" Video

This summer, when San Francisco native Sean Chapin asked the Giants to make a video for Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" project, they complied -- and became trendsetters.

Since then, seven other MLB teams -- including the Cubs, the Red Sox, and the Dodgers -- have made similar videos encouraging LGBT youth who face harassment from bullies to have hope for a better future.

Now, Chapin is at it again. He and and 7,000 other online petition signers are asking the San Francisco 49ers to be the first NFL team to tell American LGBT youth that life does get better.

And who better to deliver that message than a team that just last season appeared hopeless?

A spokesperson for the 49ers said the team has yet to receive a formal request to make the video, but would probably join the Giants in making one. And why shouldn't they when the spirit has definitely caught on in other San Francisco organizations: The SFPD announced in August that its boys in blue will be putting together its own "It Gets Better" aimed to fight homophobia and bullying.

The "It Gets Better" project was launched by columnist Dan Savage and his partner, Terry Miller, in response to a rampant rise in LGBT teen suicides and bullying. More than 20,000 videos have been produced since then,  featuring everyday people as well as celebrities, sports teams, and corporations.
