Naked Protesters? Where Is Supervisor Scott Wiener When We Need Him?

Yesterday evening commuters got screwed again when BART closed down the Powell Street station for two hours while protesters chanted and yelled their way into handcuffs. Police arrested dozens of demonstrators who allegedly interfered with BART's ability to run trains.

But outside the station, there was something even more distracting than chanting demonstrators  -- the real freedom of speech issue was flapping around. Naked protesters took to the streets, holding small signs that read "don't shoot me."

this issue has greater importance than accusations of prudery or cheap jokes about our supervisor's name.  does a small group of people have the right to enter a neighborhood (the castro) in which they do not live and dictate behavior, especially when they would not behave the same way in their own neighborhoods?   if you ask a community that is offended and repulsed by something to just ignore their feelings, will that same community just ignore their feelings of disgust when, say, gay bashers enter that community and dictate behavior?  i am a gay man living in the castro.  give me a hardware store, grocery store, library.  i want my old neighorhood back.  every day there is less diversity in my neighborhood and just more naked old fat guys coming from further and further away.  if they succeed in turning the castro into a year-round folsom street fair, the glbt movement is over.  these guys are not nudists - do not call them that.  they are exhibitionists and i want them gone!

Nudism is a fun, healthy, freeing and wholesome way for men and women to socialize and live without clothes. Nudism is a philosophy that values simplicity and increased harmony with nature. offers a friendly and confidential environment for nudists to look for friendships, relationships, and resources concerning the nudist lifestyle. They have members from all over the world who enjoy living naked, skinny dipping, and meeting others with this lifestyle.

Believe it or not, requiring people to wear clothes in public is not an invalid restriction on free speech under either the Constitution (both Fed and Cal).  Besides, they had to look long and hard (pun intended) to find a picture of naked protestors that was not vomit inducing.  The VAST majority of "naked guys" around SF are not so easy on the eyes, nor are they going about their business as they conspicuously stand on the street corner for hours.

Free speech is a wonderful thing
