Karla Parada -- the woman wanted in a mortgage fraud scam perpetrated by what police are calling a San Francisco "crime family" -- has turned herself in, SF Weekly has learned. The Antioch resident surrendered to the Sheriff's Department on Thursday around noon, according to police.

Parada was booked on a warrant with a $2.6 million bail, says SFPD Sgt. Michael Andraychak. Prosecutors said on Wednesday that she was wanted on charges of grand theft, conspiracy, elder abuse, money laundering, first degree burglary, with an aggravated white collar enhancement on all charges.

Karla Parada is the third member of the Parada family now facing charges of a mortgage scam that targeted Spanish-speaking immigrants, promising to save their house if they'd hand over the title and pay the Paradas instead of the bank. We wrote a cover story on Edwin Parada, Karla's radio host uncle who represented himself as clergy to his victims, in 2008.

Karla and her father, Carlos, are now being charged with waging the same scam on an elderly widow trying to pay for her husband's funeral.

"This has been an extensive SFPD investigation that's been ongoing for some time," Andraychak says.
