What Karaoke Songs Should David Chiu Sing?
| Laugh and the whole world laughs with you. But will they vote for you? |
And, you know what? He is!
Now a press release announces that, tonight at 9 p.m. at 1233 Polk Street, Chiu will be raising funds via karaoke. "Everyone, including David Chiu, loves karaoke!" notes the release. That's debatable -- but, via public financing, everyone has the chance to pay for it.
Well, that's not entirely true. Chiu campaign manager Nicole Derse notes that no public money is going into this event. She also promises Chiu will serenade onlookers with his rendition of "Love Shack" by the B-52s. (Perhaps a big enough donation may convince him not to.)
It's been a rough political road for Chiu of late. He was urged into the mayoral race by Rose Pak, helped engineer the ascent of Mayor Ed Lee, and took himself out of the running for the District Attorney's vacant post with aims of running for mayor. He then watched Lee break a personal promise to not seek a full term -- at Pak's urging -- en route to becoming the prohibitive favorite.
In light of those events, here are some songs we suggest Chiu (who has also mastered the violin) perform tonight:
"Just" (You Did It To Yourself) by Radiohead;
"(Why Do I Keep) Fucking Up?" by Neil Young;
"Give My Love to Rose" by Johnny Cash;
"19th Nervous Breakdown" by the Rolling Stones;
"Accidents Will Happen" by Elvis Costello;
"Fell, Destroyed" by Fugazi;
And, of course, either "I'm Down" or "Help!" by the Beatles.
Anyhow, it's a fund-raiser folks! So come on -- and bring your jukebox money!
