"opportunity" knocks for Jonathan Weber
Update: Weber will be Reuters' West Coast bureau chief.

Jonathan Weber, the first editor-in-chief and initial employee hired by the Bay Citizen, abruptly informed his staff at noon today that he would also be the first EIC to leave.

Weber confirmed to SF Weekly that he broke the news to his newsroom colleagues only hours ago. When asked how long the company's higher-ups have known of his plans to exit, he declined to answer.

The reason for Weber's decision was "a great opportunity," which he declined to clarify. Weber said he'd be free to announce his new position -- the organization in question would rather break the news than allow others to do so -- in "a day or so." He will still be based here in San Francisco. When asked if the organization he will now work for is well-known, he replied in the affirmative.

Managing editor Steve Fainaru will serve as the Bay Citizen's interim editor-in-chief. Weber's last day will be Sept. 16.

The Bay Citizen is a nonprofit founded 18 months ago with major funding from Warren Hellman, who continues to sit on the organization's board. It also produces the Bay Area section of the New York Times.
