Giants fans were supposed to see an electrifying performance by the world's fastest finger-snapper. Instead, Wednesday's Cubs game featured baffling, soundless, performance art when the Giants' scoreboard sound system failed amid Bobby Badfingers version of "Wipe Out."
Ordinarily Badfingers performs to a recorded soundtrack that cuts off right at Ron Wilson's legendary drum solo. Badfingers' ordinarily fills the silence with his uncannily rhythmic staccato snaps.
However, "at the third out, it was ready to go, and we lost the sound signal," said Giants spokesman Joe Legaz.
The video signal worked fine, which mean people got to watch Badfingers snap -- they just couldn't hear him snap.
He now worries that, rather than entertaining fans, he bewildered them.
"We sound checked that mic. And it was okay.
And then it just didn't work," Badfingers laments. "I should bitch snap a few people."
Legaz says there are no plans for a follow up performance this season, though there might be one next year. But Badfingers' fans will still have an opportunity to catch up on his act next week -- as long as they're able to tune in to Japanese TV.
"I'll play five songs, performing with the country's top comedian. It'll be a great, great show," Badfingers told us. "I'll be staying a week in a five-star hotel. They'll give me two business class tickets, and a nice little paycheck."
The good fortune seems to have soothed Badfingers' irritation over the Giants snapfu.
"Rather than finger pointing," he said. "I'll be finger snapping."
