Anthony Quinn Hughes Charged with 1998 Murder of Lisa Valdez
| 1998 murder suspect in jail |
On Sept. 10, 2011, Hughes was detained at Leavenworth and Turk streets in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and later arrested on suspicion of murdering 36-year-old Lisa Valdez, a local computer programmer, on the night of May 20, 1998.
Investigators, who have been chasing down leads and pursuing physical evidence for the last decade, say Hughes stabbed Valdez multiple times while she was alone inside her apartment. They would not say whether the two knew each other or if she was followed home, saying it would jeopardize their lengthy investigation.
"Inspectors had many leads they followed and over the years there were a few of us involved in the investigation that never forgot it," Inspector Pam Hofsass told SF Weekly. "I can tell you DNA was a big part of the investigation."
Hughes, a San Francisco resident, remains in jail on attempted rape and murder charges.
