Their solution to homelessness: Let them eat cake.
The people at the S.F.-based Tutor Corps Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the private for-profit Tutor Corp, are no Marie Antoinette's, however. The foundation has donated $500 to two Marin County teenagers who've made a hobby of baking elaborate, butter-cream-frosted birthday cakes for kids in homeless shelters and foster care homes.
According to the Marin IJ:
For several months 13-year-old Emily Villavicencio and 14-year-old Olivia Thomas, both eighth-graders at Marin Waldorf School, have been preparing the astonishingly professional-looking cakes for foster kids and children at Homeward Bound of Marin's Family Resource Center shelter.
Tutor Corps., which sells private tutoring, has a charity arm that, since 2009, has given as much as $1,500 in grants twice a year to kids with community service projects. Villaviciencio and Thomas earned their $500 because "it touched my heart -- it was so giving," Tutor Corps owner Jesse Rosencranz-Englemann said.
"It was very focused on helping other children who were probably a similar age, who didn't have the love and support that they had. "They wrote about taking hours to make theses cakes. It's not like they went to Safeway and bought a cake. They really put in so much time and went to get flowers to put on them. Each cake is individualized for the child."
Before you know it they'll be giving them shoes, crutches, and winter coats.
