Let the sun shine ... on justice
San Franciscans tend to not pay their southern namesake much attention -- until someone there is robbed of his hair at knifepoint.

The unusual crime occurred earlier this week when a man described as a 34-year-old Texas tourist was relieved of $300 by up to half a dozen men. One then removed a chunk of the man's hair with a pocketknife.

No, this sort of thing doesn't happen all the time in South San Francisco. Captain Jeff Azzopardi of the South City Police says he can't think of any links to similar crimes.

The act of slicing off someone's mane has "no significance" he can think of. Sergeant Joni Lee adds that she has "no idea at all" why this pack of robbers applied its distinctive coup de grâce. "I even saw a photo" of the victim, she adds. "He has really short, cropped hair anyway, on the sides. No clue. I have no idea."

While South City isn't exactly a tourist mecca, the 100 block of Gateway Boulevard, where the crime occurred at around 10 p.m. on Monday, is near a number of hotels and motels.

With no witnesses and little to go on, the investigation has been suspended. While the victim's hair will grow, it appears this case will not.
