It's been a month since Mark McGovern, a 22-year-old Gaelic football player, was kicked into a coma while playing a match at Treasure Island -- and police made no arrests. Tonight, the McGovern family is planning to go on KTVU, appealing to anyone listening to help crack the case.

McGovern, who is a member of the Ulster San Francisco club, has been in a coma since the June 25 game, where an "off-the-ball" incident happened during a match against the Celts, a team made up of mostly American-born players.

After the incident, Ulster coach Joe Duffy told SF Weekly he didn't see what happened, but he heard that one of his players told police he saw a Celts player standing over McGovern and saying, "You won't get up from that."

There were rumors among players in the San Francisco Gaelic Athletic Association that McGovern had been involved in a "fracas." Police identified a person of interest, but made no arrests.

Meanwhile, Ulster has begun planning a fundraiser for McGovern, who came to San Francisco to play on the team for the summer. His family comes from a small town in Ireland with very few resources, his friends say. They need all the help they can get to cover the cost of the medical bills.

Details about the fundraiser are still being worked out, Duffy says, adding that there has already been efforts in Ireland to raise money for the family.

"The family is strong and positive and they are dealing with it really well, but they are in it for the long haul," Duffy told us. "Everyone hopes Mark makes a full recovery, but he has a long way to go."

Men operate in fits of passion, and then, often regret for life what they have done. May God preserve us from ourselves.

This Irish American family is praying for young Mr McGovern and his family.  And suggest that all football fans who have a family, show support for this family's crisis.
