Best party City Hall has hosted in some time
Supervisor John Avalos has been taking heat over his controversial ballot measure that would ban the city's Rec and Park Department from leasing out park properties for private parties -- including birthday bashes of all sorts.

But to show that he isn't a stick-in-the-mud -- and not as overly sensitive as he's been described -- Avalos has planned a little party of his own tomorrow, when the Board of Supervisors committee is set to discuss his ballot measure.

He's hosting what could be the city's first official Very Merry Unbirthday party, with Rec and Park director Phil Ginsburg -- and anyone else who doesn't have a birthday tomorrow -- as the guest of honor.

"I was thinking about bringing a Very Merry Unbirthday cake, too," Avalos told us. "I want to show how absurd some of the arguments are against this ballot measure."

It'll be a far more appetizing way to protest park privatization than puking in the city recreation areas.

We asked Avalos what this "Unbirthday cake" might taste like: "I don't know. I haven't gotten that far," he says.

But he promises it will be fun. After all, that's what parties are all about.

What: A Very Merry Unbirthday
When: Thursday, 1:30 p.m.
Where: City Hall
Who: San Francisco and Phil Ginsburg
