The Fourth of July Weekend DUI Count Is in

Our founding fathers would be disappointed.
We knew that even when warned about DUI checkpoints, there's a good chance some would party too hard over the Fourth of July weekend and then foolishly get behind the wheel.

And now we have statistics to back this up: Police report that 30 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence over the holiday weekend.

Those arrests came after the California Highway Patrol saturated the freeways with patrols on Friday night and officers staged a DUI checkpoint at Divisadero and Lombard on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the CHP ramped up maximum enforcement on the freeways around the city during the entire weekend.

At least no one got killed. SFPD Captain Al Casciato, the campaign coordinator who last week told us that "even drunk drivers hate drunk drivers", came out with a similarly blunt statement about the post-holiday figures.

"Every one of those 30 drivers could easily have driven another few blocks and killed someone."

Well, we're glad that didn't happen.
