Fiona Ma Demands State Boycott of Southwest Airlines After Pilot's Rant About 'Gays and Grannies'

Fiona Ma is not taking shit from Southwest
Assemblywoman Fiona Ma isn't going to stand for trash-talking. The San Francisco Democrat slammed Southwest Airlines today, asking her fellow lawmakers to stop flying Southwest after a pilot was busted for bashing gays, women, and overweight people via a microphone.

Ma, who is a frequent flier, is drafting a letter to the state General Services Department, officially requesting that the state sever its contracts it currently has with Southwest Airlines, which happens to be the preferred airline for lawmakers in Sacramento.

Ma says she is appalled by the pilot's diatribe, laced with obscenities and slurs, that took place on March 24 on a flight out of Austin. The pilot's comments -- which were targeting flight attendants -- were heard across the entire Southwest Airlines communications system.

"There's 12 flight attendants, individual, never the same flight attendant twice. Eleven (expletive) over the top (expletive), (expletive) homosexuals and a granny," he reportedly said.

The airline suspended the pilot, who is now back at work. And Ma says that punishment doesn't match the crime.

"They need to do more than slap the guy on the wrist," Ma told SF Weekly. "His abusive comments are shocking. We hope Southwest will take more action."

If not, she expects the state of California to dump the airline.

We asked Ma what kind of damage that might cause Southwest, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. We put in a call to find out how much money the state spends on air travel for lawmakers and their staff.  We'll update you when we hear more.

In the meantime, check out what has Ma and so many others riled up:

Seriously?  CA is so far in the hole now I can't believe any politician would consider wasting valuable time, money, and resources. So the pilot was on a politically incorrect rampage.  He didn't really do anything more than anyone else, which is to express his opinions and thoughts.  That is his constitutional right.  His problem was he should have known it was being heard elsewhere.  Do I like what he had to say?  No, but from what I understand no passengers in the cabin heard him.  I think this is not something that should be politicalized.  Why should millions of people be inconvenienced because of one dumb employee?  Assemblywoman Ma should stay focused on her job and help figure out a way to get CA out of debt, get better schools, fix the roads, and feed and shelter the poor and homeless.  *Those* things are what she was elected to do, not this sort of nonsense.

This woman needs to get a life, a REAL life.  I am amazed that she even got elected to the Assembly; then again, I suppose she actually  fits in pretty much perfectly with all the other nut jobs we've got up there. How 'bout focusing on a serious issue, Toots - like the BUDGET ?!!!!

This "private" conversation happened while ON DUTY on company property. There is no expectation of privacy on the flight deck, EVERYTHING is recorded. I am a 24 year SW employee and the pilots are allowed to get away with murder. I have had coworkers fired for joking around OFF the clock in the break room.

This is about respecting your co-workers. If I employed this man he would sacked because of his obvious lack of respect for his fellow workers. Your workplace is not a pick-up joint and you should be professional and respectful at all times. Imagine how those crew are feeling right now! I would be traumatised and devastated if one of my colleagues were to talk about me like that! Your workplace is supposed to be supportive and safe and then you are able to do what you are paid for...work as a team toprovide a service to your customers! This man thinks his team is supposed to be made up of hot chicks to satisfy his cravings! Grow up mate and stop insulting your own intelligence!

ver been stuck in 1, maybe 2, person(s)/car I-15 LA-LAS/LAS-LA traffic? At TRUE $/mile drive cost (35-40 cents/mi)), (Often much) cheaper to fly in highly competitive mkts, even w/ 'destination gnd trans. cost.     http://bit.ly/lXhuRD

In the last week we heard that airlines did not do proper drug testing, kicked people off for cloth they wore and for being disabled, did not check that employees are legal aliens and tortured us with system crashes.        http://bit.ly/lXhuRD

Unbelievable...who voted this idiot into office.  Why attack a reputable and income producing Airline for the errors of one pilot (who was under the impression he was having a private conversation)?  The pilot made a mistake.  I do not agree with his statements, however, they are merely his thoughts and opinions.  Rest assured, plenty of gay and "grande" Flight Attendants have voiced their rude thoughts pertaining to Pilots.

Cash is king, right? Why not let them own slaves, since they make so much money?

And why don't you take that SSI cheque  and buy/smoke some more medical marijuana?

Agree 100% with this woman.  Southwest should be boycotted until the pilot is fired.  Has nothing to do with being touchy or PC.  It's about human dignity and respect.

What foolish and wasteful legislator grandstanding over a single incident that an upstanding corporate citizen, which has brought considerable income to the State, certainly will be handling (and has).  Perhaps the Assemblywoman would be better spending her time working on a balanced State budget.  In the end, shameful, childish conduct on her part.

That pilot is the one who is childish! Like his workplace should provide fodder for his sex life! He should be grateful he doesn't work in aged care like I do. haha

Yes, any private individual or corporation that pays enough in taxes is beyond criticism.  In fact, they should have the right to break the law.

Don't forget "grandes" - means fat people, I guess.

At least SW doesn't kill state workers scores at a time:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P...

And if US Air turns out to be racist and United's PCs go down, it will be tough for state workers to get around the Golden State...

Touchy , touchy , touchy...sheesh... Let's all just sing a chorus of Kumbaya , instead.
