| Imagine a dry pit instead of the bay |
Yao Ming isn't merely
the tallest player in the NBA. In a commercial he filmed in San Francisco on Thursday along the Bay, the Houston Rocket's center proved he's superhuman in other ways, too.
Like a Hollywood star, Yao stood over the Bay where the commercial was filmed as camera crews worked around him. Once the special effects are added, he will be standing over a dry basin that has replaced the saltwater of the Bay.
"Then the spot will say 'we have a choice' between preserving and not preserving natural resources," says David Contois, communications manager for WildAid, a nonprofit striving to end the illegal wildlife trade.
Yao warmed up to the idea of starring in a nature-loving public service
announcement after he saw Jackie Chan in one, Contois said.

Before filming started, Yao spent the morning voicing support for a
bill that would ban shark fin soup. Afterward, he lived the life of a star working on a commercial, meaning he sat around as dozens of crew members fiddled with equipment, getting up every once in a while to follow a director's instructions.
At least it was a mellow day for Yao, nothing like running up and down the court.
