Taxicab Fares to Increase in San Francisco

• My personal opinion is that a meter increase is not the best solution and I say this from the perspective of management. We need to increase demand by improving service and to improve service we need to add 500 more taxis. The additional taxis will allow cab companies to meet the demand of the public and the public will learn to depend on SF taxis. In the end, service will improve and demand will increase.

• I have the opposite problem. I live in the Sunset District and no cabdriver ever wants to take me there because its "too far" and they rather stay close and pick up more people who are going shorter distances. I say they should not be allowed to discriminate. 

• Supply and demand doesn't really come into play when the prices are fixed by the government.

•  Raise fares, continue with bad service. The SF way!

• It's about time. Supply and demand... If there are never enough cabs, perhaps it's due to the fact that they are too much cheaper than the alternatives, causing supply to be exhausted too readily? Either increase the supply and keep the price the same, or raise the price. I've talked to many cabbies who barely scrape $25-50 together in a night after the lease price or gate fee + gas they have to pay.  This is why many times if you try to get a cab to take you a few blocks away they will refuse as they are holding out for an airport or cross-town fare which would actually make them money.  Economics 101 people..

•  "There needs to be..." the catch-cry of the sideline critic. On what basis is this considered 'expensive'? Historically? Relatively to owning a car? Compared to parking? Maybe it's exactly what it should cost.

•  If there is an increase in the already ridiculous prices for cabs, there also needs to be a sharp increase in the number of taxis. If we're expected to pay surcharges and inflated rates to compensate for a troubled economy, we should not have to wait 30 minutes to get a cab during peak times.
