Taxicab Fares to Increase in San Francisco

It will cost you an arm and a leg
Not only is it seemingly impossible to hail a taxicab in San Francisco on a Friday night, but then if you find one, it could  cost you more than the entire night out, including dinner and a movie.

Here is something that's sure to upset locals. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is proposing to significantly increase the cost of cab rides in the city. Right now, it costs $11.20 to travel three miles with about three minutes of traffic on a Friday night. But the Ex reports that under the new proposal, that same scenario would cost you nearly $20.

The plan is to increase meter rates by 10 cents for every one-fifth of a mile, and another dime for every minute you are stuck in traffic, the Ex reports. In addition, anyone picked up at home during peak hours would have to pay a $5 surcharge.

Cabbies argue that the rate increases are long overdue and necessary -- with higher fuel prices and a crappy economy hanging over us. Yet the new fares would make San Francisco one of the most expensive places to take a taxi in the nation.

Even more than New York City.
