Shark Fin Soup Ban Is More Popular Than You Think

A new poll commissioned by the Monterrey Bay Aquarium shows that 76 percent of all state voters and 70 percent of Chinese-American voters support legislation that would ban on the sale, possession, and trade of shark fins. This is despite the fact that the Chinese-American community has deemed the ban an attack on Chinese culture. However, leaders in the community pointed out to reporters that only 50 percent of Chinese immigrants are registered voters.
The poll shows that of those who support the ban, 59 percent have very strong feelings about it.
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Sen. Leland Yee, who is running for mayor, have both come out against the ban. Yee told SF Weekly that the state already has sufficient bans on shark finning, and that there is a "lawful way to allow restaurants to offer shark fin soup."
