SF Weekly Staff Writer Peter Jamison Named a Livingston Awards Finalist

Maybe we're biased ... but we think it's a winning piece

​We want to announce that SF Weekly's Peter Jamison has been named one of the finalists for the prestigious Livingston Awards, which honor journalists under the age of 35.

Jamison was named a finalist for his September 2010 news feature, "Head Case," which details how ex-football players with head injuries often end up in the criminal justice system.

"Chris Brymer's story deserved to be told, and it's gratifying to see my reporting about his case recognized," Jamison says. "I'm also thankful that my editors gave me the time and direction I needed to understand and describe what happened to him. The interplay of football, brain damage, and the criminal courts would be tough to explain in the crime blotter."

His story followed the case of former USC and NFL lineman Chris Brymer, who was arrested and charged with hate-crime assault in connection with a fight outside a soup kitchen last year. Brymer, a one-time star athlete and successful mortgage broker, was living out of a shopping cart on the streets of San Francisco at the time of his arrest. He was eventually acquitted of all charges in a jury trial.

Jamison joins two other writers from Village Voice Media, Sarah Fenske from Phoenix New Times and Kristen Hinman of Riverfront Times, both of whom were also named as 2010 finalists. The Livingston Awards give three $10,000 prizes for local, national, and international reporting.

The winners will be announced on June 7, 2011.
