Wannabe Mayors Descend on S.F. This Weekend

Seeking the Latino vote.

​While everyone else is kicking back for the weekend, the many, many aspiring mayors of San Francisco will spend their free time aggressively campaigning.

On the exhausting list are a slew of events aimed to court voters of all types -- parents, Mission hipsters, and dog lovers.

First up: state Sen. Leland Yee. Last weekend, we saw his supporters wooing the Latino vote at the Cesar Chavez Day Parade. where they were seen holding "Yee Se Puede!" signs -- a clever riff on the Spanish protest chant "Si se puede!" ("Yes we can!"). But this weekend, Yee himself will make an appearance in the city's bohemian 'hood, talking to voters at Haus, the chic minimalist cafe on 24th Street. And because it's Saturday, he is giving everyone a little extra time to sleep in.

Yee's event starts at 11 a.m., followed by a more chill Sunday morning coffee chat in the TenderNob at Little Bird Coffeehouse, also at 11 a.m.   

Meanwhile, Supervisor David Chiu will break away from his moderate roots and spend the weekend trying to get labor firmly on his side. He will be at Local Here 2 addressing the blue-collar crew of San Francisco. The topics: housing and land use.

Tax Assessor and Collector Phil Ting is also planning a trip to the Mission District, where he will hold a Solutions Palooza. Yes, a solutions palooza is exactly what it sounds like. The event will be held at Horace Mann Middle School on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Former supe Bevan Dufty is making his campaign a little more family-oriented. The father of one plans to first court the city's dog-lovers at DogFest in Duboce Park, starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The fundraiser for McKinley Elementary will award the cutest pups with the best barks. Although Dufty doesn't have a dog, we've been told that he loves people with dogs (who vote).

After that, Dufty plans to win over the city's kiddos -- and their parents -- at a Healthy Kids event at the Tenderloin YMCA on Saturday afternoon. Wait, he's not done. On Sunday, Dufty will ride in the Cherry Blossom Festival parade in a car with Jose Cisneros, the city treasurer, and later that evening, he'll wrap it up Dufty-style with a "tea dance" at Underground SF in the Haight in a fundraiser for his campaign.

On the other side of town, City Attorney Dennis Herrera is planning to stay indoors and build his campaign army. He will be recruiting volunteers at his headquarters on California Street. So come by on Saturday 11 a.m., and Herrera will surely put you to work.
