Teens Get Off Muni, Shoot Man in Bayview
| Brazen gunfire |
Police told SF Weekly that the teens were riding the 44 when it came to a stop at Palou Avenue and Newhall Street. The boys got off of the coach and started firing multiple rounds, hitting the victim, who was on the sidewalk, in the torso, said Officer Albie Esparza.
The victim is in surgery at San Francisco General Hospital.
The shooting happened at the height of the morning commute -- 8:02 a.m. It's not yet clear whether the victim was riding the bus and then got off and the suspects followed him, or if he was just walking on the street, Esparza said.
After the shooting, the two boys ran eastbound toward Third Street. The Muni driver remained at the scene to talk to officers, and Esparza said he believes that bus was taken out of service.
Commuters say the shooting created a transit delay, however, Muni spokesman Paul Rose has not yet confirmed this.
The teens are described as 13 and 15 years old. Police are investigating whether the victim knew the suspects, and whether the shooting was gang related.
"It's disturbing that the suspects are so young," Esparza said. "It's also disturbing because it was early morning and people were on their way to work and school."
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 575-4444.
