Judge Vaughn Walker Admits He Is Gay

​As if he hadn't riled up opponents of same-sex marriage enough, Judge Vaughn Walker on Wednesday publicly announced that he is indeed gay.

Already an icon in the gay community, the retired judge, who ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, reportedly told a group of reporters that he has been in a relationship with a man for 10 years.

"He is a physician," Walker said.
He also told reporters that he never considered his sexual orientation as a good reason to recuse himself from the landmark case about gay marriage.

Walker, who was appointed to the bench by Former President George H. Bush in 1989, kept his sexual orientation under wraps as he presided over the historic trial challenging Proposition 8, the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Walker struck down the law, calling it unconstitutional. The case is currently being appealed.

There has long been speculation that Walker might be gay. After he retired from the bench last February, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the biggest open secret was that Walker is gay himself.

Although anytime Walker was asked about it, he would kindly respond: "No comment."
