A powerful wave
Top Maverick surfer Sion Milosky was killed yesterday evening after drowning while surfing the Mavericks off the coast of Half Moon Bay.

Media outlets are reporting that the 35-year-old Hawaiian native died after falling in the face of a massive wave that engulfed him. He had caught at least six waves before the accident happened around 6 p.m.

Milosky was taken to shore by other surfers and later pronounced dead at Seton Coastside Hospital in Moss Beach. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

According to the Chronicle, Milosky was named the North Shore Underground Surfer of the Year last month. He used some of the $25,000 prize to fly to Northern California on Sunday.

He is the second surfer to die at Mavericks, the annual surfing competition that draws top surfers from across the world. Mark Foo drowned at Mavericks in 1994.

Another surfer, Jacob Trette, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries in February after he nearly drowned during the Mavericks surf contest.
