How Michelle Obama's wardrobe is shaping...politics
There's no doubt Michelle Obama is the most avid fashionista of any First Lady we've seen in recent history.

But how is she influencing your style?

Well, come next Saturday, March 12, former Harper's Bazaar editor-in-chief Kate Betts will be holding court at the de Young Museum to talk about the First Lady's dress and sign copies of her new book: "Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and The Power Of Style."

You'll have to come in style yourself, with $20 in your pocket to hear the discussion, which starts at 4 p.m.
Betts plugs her book in a YouTube video, that we just watched. Her basic premise: Michelle Obama has both style and brains.

Imagine that.

"You had First Ladies who used style to influence their husbands' administrations and on the other hand, First Ladies who used politics, who threw themselves into the fray." (Cue Hillary Clinton headband wars here -- a feminist's nightmare.)

"When I looked at Michelle Obama, she seemed to combine both hands, she took Hillary Clinton's intellect and dressed it in Jackie Kennedy's clothes," Betts said.

Yes, we can have both brains and beauty, ladies. As our commander in chief would say, "Yes we can."

"Here's someone who's not afraid to stand out in a city where everyone'e desperate to fit in. She's writing a new etiquette for Washington - she's not afraid to wear bare arms in Congress; she's not afraid to leap over an obstacle course barefoot on the South Lawn, she's not afraid to touch the queen. I think this new etiquette is what is really setting Obama apart," Betts says.

Betts is definitely onto something:

If you want more of the above, you can get a ticket for the event here. Come on, San Francisco, we know you care about style. According to an article about the fashion tribes of San Francisco in the New York Times, we have the clothes, but we wear them in private.
