City College Men's Basketball Takes State Title: Never Forget!
| The unforgettable team of the century... |
This was, every story noted, CCSF's first state title since 1962. That got us to thinking: What does anyone remember about that famed '62 Rams squad? The answer, sadly, is not much.
Over at City College, there's no remnant of the team whatsoever online. The folks we talked to at the athletic department noted that all of the old basketball programs were lost in a recent move, so there don't appear to be any paper records, either. Is there even a box score for the 1962 title game lying around somewhere? It appears not.
In fact, on CCSF's men's basketball web page, it lists its title year as 1963.
Calls to the California Community College Athletic Association confirm that, yes, CCSF did defeat Citrus College in '62 -- just like it did this year. But the league didn't keep track of the players on the last title squad -- just coach Sid Phelan.
Folks at City College, the CCCAA, and Citrus College are tracking down that '62 box score at our behest. With luck, we'll get the names from CCSF's last star team soon.
In the meantime, here are the identities of of this year's heroes. Fame can be fleeting, it seems. Enjoy it, gentlemen.
