What's shocking is the Police Commission's vote
The sentiment over whether San Francisco cops should carry Tasers seems to be swinging the other way -- in favor of the stun guns.

Last year, the Police Commission refused to even allow the SFPD to study the potential for cops to carry Tasers. But in a severe reversal last night, the commission, which has new members, voted 6-1 to let the department consider Tasers.

It was a lively 6-hour debate that came with theatrics and reenactments of dangerous scenarios that cops say would have benefited from the stun guns.

Commissioner Angela Chan, presented her own evidence, arguing that Tasers are dangerous and unnecessary. All along, Chan, an immigration attorney, has been resistant to discussing Tasers; she said the commission had earlier this year decided this would not be a priority.

But the issue quickly resurfaced when former Police Chief George Gascón vowed to bring back the Taser debate after police officers shot a knife-wielding man in a wheelchair earlier this year.
