S.F. Woman Beaten by Cab Driver in Lower Haight After Not Paying Fare
| Taxi driver by night, robber by day |
That's what happened to one woman after she hopped into a cab en route home, and apparently dozed off. When the cab driver arrived at her destination -- Scott and Haight Streets -- he demanded his $9 fare.
But the woman fought back, saying that she was familiar with the route and it should cost no more than $6.50 -- the only money she had. The woman got out of the cab, saying she would go up to her house to get more money.
But the cabbie didn't believe her; he jumped out of the taxi, pushed her to the ground, beat her up, and took her wallet and keys.
He drove off in the blue and white taxi, police say.
The taxi was possibly a DeSoto cab, but police could not confirm that yet. No arrests have been made, but police offered some advice for those who rely on cabbies to get around town.
"Don't fall asleep in the back of the taxi, the cabbie may take a longer route to your destination," police said.
But that might be the least of your worries.
